Reminiscent of other war films, in a good way
This film really drew me in. I was excited and caught up in all the action. There are some amazing fight scenes and battles. At times I was reminded of Lord of the Rings and even Troy- but just in the scope and themes. It's thrilling stuff.

This movie also makes me think about the evolution of filming styles in the East and West. The visual narration is so varied, it makes me wish I knew more about the history of film.

dear readers,
I thought this movie was pretty badass. There emphasized on stragedy and tatics more than I expected, which is pretty cool! I wanna say... a chinese version of troy. And instead of achilles, theres like 5 of them that seems to be untouchable. Which is pretty old cause back in this time, i would think its pretty easy to die when you're surrounded. But these guys proved otherwise. If your looking for a old school china war movie this is the one to watch! Action scenes were great!

Red Cliff could have benefited heavily from competent editing. A number of scenes (the reflective shields, riding into the tortoise, the arrow boats) went on *way* longer than was needed. I don't mind long movies, but this thing felt like Woo was padding it on purpose with mindlessly repetitive action scenes.
Woo also couldn't decide whether this was an action movie, a drama, or a martial arts flick. Going between Cao Cao's political machinations and Guan Yu suddenly ripping through low-level enemies like something out of a video game was pretty jarring. It's like if HBO's John Adams went back and forth between Adams in France, and George Washington personally killing hundreds of Redcoats as his troops cheered and played soccer.
Combine that with a goofy sense of humor that didn't really fit the movie and a lack of character development (I realize it's a famous story in China, but that's no excuse), and you're left with a flashy but hollow blockbuster. 2/5 for Part I, 3/5 for Part II (mostly because I could look forward to it being over).

Red Cliff review
John Woo does classical chinese history. A very bold attempt to capture the strategic themes of ~ 200 AD China. If you have read the Art of War you will notice many of the themes reverberating throughout the movie. John Woo tries a bit too hard in some places to present a certain cinematic air and just enough in other places. The atmosphere captures the time period very well. If you like war movies, martial arts, drama, and classical chinese literature, you will like this movie.
It is based on presumably the most famous of all classical chinese wars between Cao Cao (I know him as one of the most famous of the commentators of Sun Tzu's Art of War) and Zouh Yi (I'm sure I'm spelling that one wrong).
