Fantastic
From plot to acting to the black-and-white decision, Raging Bull is fantastic. There is no area where this film isn't successful. It's a definite must-see over and over again.

Powerful film
Scorsese truly brings the life of tragic boxer Jake La Motta in this riveting masterpiece. It basically has the rise and fall of a boxer in a juxtaposition. As he rises to get his shot at the title, his personal life begins to head towards a downward spiral. Robert De Niro is cast perfectly as La Motta, first as a no-nonsense boxer who has a penchant for a 15-year old girl only to marry her a few years later. Joe Pesci was in top form as La Motta's outspoken younger brother/trainer Joey, who tends to grow tired of his brother's antics. While the film is mostly black and white, there are some nice home movie-style footage seen in color. A real classic movie.

The film has - and deserves - a reputation as a masterpiece of film making and acting. The black and white cinematography is crisp and precise. The boxing sequences are nasty brawls, and not the dances seen in Rocky or other boxing films. Robert De Niro's performance is usually mentioned as one of the greatest in Hollywood history, up there with Brando's best roles. The supporting cast is marvelous, including Joe Pesci before he became a maniac (as in GoodFellas or the Lethal Weapon sequels)
It's a movie that every film buff should see. The problem is that Jake LaMotta, as portrayed by De Niro, is about the most repellent SOB ever to be a film's protagonist. He is so unlikeable that we eagerly for root him to fail. The result is just over two hours of watching pure cinematic art about someone for whom we can feel neither sympathy or happiness. It is a film everyone should see once - but that few will want to see much more than that.

I found myself perplexed as to why this movie is considered so great. Honestly, it's a little boring.

great movie!
This movie is based on the life of Jake LaMotta, and it stays true to the reality. LaMotta wasn't an easy person to be around but he sure was interesting. De Niro's acting is brilliant and so is Joe Pesci's. Martin Scorsese created one of the best biography films ever here. Rough and atmospheric, this sports drama is a masterpiece.
