Rachel Getting Married, 2008

A slice of life film covering a weekend with a family, one of whose two daughters is getting married, and the other is getting sprung from rehab for the occasion. A lot of the scenes are unpleasant or boring (just like real life) and go on long after you stop caring about them (just like real life). The dishwasher scene is a perfect example: interesting to the participants, but tedious to an outsider. The film's success is due almost entirely to Anne Hathaway's uncanny performance as Kym, the addict. She captures the essential narcissism and self-pity of the addict -- even the recovering addict -- almost perfectly. I've known a lot of people like Kym. The rest of the cast is strong, as well. Overall, the film should have been tightened, either in the script or in the editing: as Hitchcock once said, "Drama is life with the dull bits cut out", but this movie doesn't cut them out.
