Really awesome movie
This is my favorite romance movie ever. It is very creative and unusual, but at the same time you can relate to the characters. Very fun to watch and very unique. Avoids cliches, very artistically done and I loved it.

A film filled with tension but is barely a comedy
The film has good pace to it and the development of Sandlers character is handled brilliantly. The are a few quirky moments and fairly humorous moments in the film but a comedy or even a dark comedy this is not, it's more of a drama/romance story......

Yeah it's a very good film and I recommend it, but it's not a classic.

Punch Drunk Love
Director Paul Thomas Anderson finds a star in Adam Sandler, here better than in many of his other films. Sandler accesses his inner vulnerability and allows the comedy to come naturally albeit quirkily, and it works.

Who Knew Adam Sandler Could Act?
Despite it being the same he has played in every other film, the typical Adam Sandler character here is far more defined and introspective and ready to burst in front of our eyes from an inordinate amount of anxiety (emphasized by erratic music),and Mr. Sandler’s performance is adequate, far better than previous performances. Director Paul Thomas Anderson’s choice of lead, therefore, was not at all out of the ordinary, but many Sandler fans conditioned to expect characters and themes similar to those of his 90’s oeuvre should know before viewing that this work is typical of P.T.A., not Sandler.
Using far more visual and slightly more verbal symbolism than what was used in his first three films, Anderson creates a world where main character Barry Egan (Sandler), a nervous wreck, an inexperienced lover, following a car accident, finds an harmonium in the street and decides to fix it. Due to Barry's non-existent love-life, one of his many sisters attempts to set him up with her friend: Lena Leonard, played by Emily Watson, one of the greatest actresses working today, and, despite the rather normal and dry-eyed and emotionally stable character, is played finely. They meet; they bond; Barry repairs the small piano. However, one incident, prior to meeting Lena, manifests every now and then: private information naively given to a phone-sex hotline operator has led extortionist Dean Trumbell, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, to send four lackeys (brothers) into and out to ruin Barry’s life.
Excelling in the areas of directing and acting and editing—in sum, in all areas--, atmospheric, resounding, of substance and of heart, Paul Thomas Anderson’s fourth feature exemplifies why he is one of America’s leading filmmakers.

8/10Great
Adam Sandler acted out his id with stunning conviction, and PTA further proved himself to be one of the finest craftsmen around. Other than that, Punch Drunk Love is a miss. The few times it succeeds, it succeeds marginally, and never for the intended reason. PTA, to his credit, doesnt like succumbing to audience ideals; unfortunately, he doesnt like succumbing to syntactics either. As a result, the high concept film trudges along half-coherently, with no internal logic or purpose. Like a Lynch film, its founded on a few interesting ideas, but where Lynch can form his ideas into a cohesive whole, PTA's are too erratic and disparate to work cinematically. While Sandler, Watson and Hoffmans performances and PTA's craftsmanship are stunning to look at, one cannot help but be overcome with the feeling that the film ultimately proves to be less than the sum of its parts. Its a failure, but an interesting one nonetheless.

Paul Thomas Anderson (writer/director of Boogie Nights) hits one fully out of the park here with Punch-Drunk Love, starring Adam Sandler in his first attempt at not being Adam Sandler.
Beware, everybody: this movie is not for everyone. It is far, far from being a Sandler comedy, and it lacks the accessibility of Boogie Nights; it is, essentially, an art film, which also happens to be a love story, which also happens to be about our isolationist modern world, which also happens to tell the tale of a man with some extreme mental problems, and said man has some horrible family history and most likely some unfortunate sexual hang-ups, and this story is told with a bizarre, highly percussive and repetitive score which builds tension at odd times, and there is a completely empty supermarket that is way over-lit, and—here's where you've really got to watch out—there is a fair amount of symbolism. Some things will seem completely unimportant to the plot and you will find yourself scratching your head over their relevance, but once you understand that this film is more literature than it is entertainment, you'll probably come to love it.

i saw this movie last night - didn't know exactly what to expect, i read that it was a romantic comedy and i thought it might be another boring, banal tom hanks-meg ryan kind of comedy. instead i found myself fascinated by a very touching and slightly offbeat movie, that made the familiar falling in love theme much more interesting than usual. i loved the fact that the heroes are not perfect and good looking but have flaws and are more like real people i know. i also liked the fact that it wasn't cheesy. try and i think you won't be disappointed!
