I can truly appreciate the love-overcoming-all-obstacles story, but what kind of movie is this? If I didn't know any better, I would think that John Waters, Penny Marshall, and Brian de Palma collaborated to co-direct this movie. The consistent switching from slapstick, to sticky sweet, to devestating dire and back again really ruined it for me. I don't recommend this film to anyone; it will just frustate you.

This film is almost insulting to me--almost. And it takes a lot to almost insult me. But the whole reatarded kid thing is just walking too close to the line. The film is funny in some places--darn funny--and in others just completely lost. When it is hitting it's stride it is a bold, daring, funny, poignant dramedy about growing up and being different. When it isn't hitting it's stride, it is an insulting, de-humanizing mess. So I split the difference and gave it 3 stars; it's hard to predict whether others will like it, hate it, or be indifferent.
