A serviceable drama about a recently deceased, mentally incapacitated but formerly brilliant mathematician and his daughter who may or may not be brilliant, insane, or both. None of the performances are particularly memorable and Jake Gyllenhaal comes off as a golly-gee boy scout character. I'm not familiar with the play, but I suspect that it must have been more interesting than this rather ponderous screen adaptation turned out to be. Much of what's here seems slow, predictable and unsatisfying.

It's always worth your time to watch Anthony Hopkins play an interesting role, reminding us that not everything he does has to be a shadow of Lecter. This role is one such role, a mathematical genius slowly devolving into delerium. However, for my money, there is not a much more overrated actress than Paltrow, who almost always bores me to tears with her over-simplified and emotionally void portrayals. These two elements combine to make this a so-so movie with an interesting story, an OK script and passable direction, but the chemistry between the leads is sorely lacking. A more dynamic actress was needed for the lead role.
