After his mother dies and he is placed in the care of an abusive foster mother, twelve-year-old J.J. Somerled (Frankie Nasso) runs away--literally--from a difficult past, taking only his electronic keyboard with him, and begins living in New York City's Central Park. Making music and enjoying the beauty of the park and his new freedom, J.J. meets The Guardian (an elf-like Harvey Keitel) and befriends a sad old couple who lost their own son (Kathleen Turner, Danny Aiello).
