High concentration and patience probably is the key, and some brain work during the film. But shit I must say - I can almost PROMISE - that if you give it another shot or two you will have a new favorite.

Great movie! I didn't know what to expect other than something about a time machine, but I was blown away in the end. The low budget gave it a very realistic feel to the movie.

Where films like Back To The Future take a comedic route in exploring time travel and the paradoxes that can unfold, this film is purely serious. It isn't an easy film to watch and do not expect to fully comprehend the device or how it operates, and the implications therein. You'll be thinking a lot about it for hours or even days afterward.
You probably want to visit the forum too, to try to make sense of what you see. Search for "Primer" on google.

I can't even begin to explain Primer. Heck, I'm still not entirely sure what happened myself. I think I could watch this movie about three more times and still not be entirely sure about the story. But, wow, was Primer a great movie. Made by a first-time filmmaker with no idea how to film a movie, Primer is a very interesting study in amateur film. The script is fast and hard, with characters talking over one another and major plot points being flung at the viewer in quick succession. The movie was filmed on a very low budget, and then went on to beat out Garden State at the Sundance Film Festival.
Without attempting to analyze the plot, all I can say is "Wow." Primer doesn't treat its audience like typical theater-goers. It doesn't spoon feed the viewer details step-by-step like most movies do. The plot is intricate and complex, to say the least, and once the story begins the viewer is never given a chance to catch up. Primer starts off a little slow, but as the momentum builds, the film gets quicker and the story get deeper. Primer will blow your mind. If you don't mind thinking while you're relaxing on the couch, then this one is for you.
The DVD seemed to present the film quite accurately. I'm not sure what this movie looked like in theaters, so I can't be sure, but I'd imagine all of the shortcomings on the DVD were part of the film itself. Being filmed with such a low budget, I didn't expect anything more the stereo sound. While the sound stage was noticeably narrow, the dialogue cam through clearly, even with several characters speaking at once. For a stereo track, this mix sounded quite good. The video was grainy and rough, especially in the darker scenes. I attribute this to the quality of equipment and film used when making the movie. Nothing looked so bad that it was distracting, but it was obviously a low budget movie. However, the look for the film perfectly.

Okay. You know that part of the Star Trek episode where they spend 5 minutes spewing some nonsense technobabble like "We need to disrupt the phase adjusters to compensate for the Heisenberg coil" and you'd wish they'd just get on with it? Well, that's this entire movie. I got the feeling that it's actually really incredibly complex, but the just comes across as gibberish. Basically, the whole thing is these two dudes having conversations where they obliquely refer to a bunch of stuff and you're supposed to somehow put it all together. Like they'll mention something once and not explain it at all, but it's actually a really pivotal part of the movie and you absolutely need to understand it to make any sense of the thing. And then they'll pile these things on top of each other until it becomes absolutely impossible to follow. I don't know what's supposed to be enjoyable about this movie. It's just these two dudes talking about things that don't make any sense.

In my opinion, there really is a shortage of good time travel movies that attempt to make sense out of the technology used. Primer, starring no one in particular, attempts to fill this void, but the science might go a little over the viewer's head. The movie is about a couple of entrepreneur engineers that "accidentally" build a time machine in their garage while working on something else to make money on. Once they figure out how to use it, the results are unpredictable and suspenseful due to the greedy nature of humans.
The first 15 or 20 minutes of the movie are pretty flat and the scientific language may bore the audience. The story starts off with 4 friends that are arguing about what device they should try to make next, and since they take turns, one of them decides to try and build a super refrigerator. While two of the friends, Abe and Aaron, are testing the unit, they get some weird results. One of them sends the results to a lab and when he gets them back, he discovers they've made a time machine. Once you see them start to figure it out, you are hooked for the rest of the movie and are waiting to see what happens next.
If you are a nerd or geek, you'll really like this movie because you'll feel like it was made for people like you. If you aren't, you'll still enjoy it because of the suspense, but the science is likely to make your head hurt if you think about the paradoxes of time travel, which this movie also deals with. The acting is ok, but not great, and the script could have probably been written better. However, the story is very unique, and for the $7K budget this was made with, I think this movie deserves some credit.

I am so glad I watched this movie, I cannot believe Carruth made this for $7000. It's probably the best movie I've seen since Memento and Donnie Darko. The only knock on the movie is the character development isn't what it could be, but it's barely over an hour long, what can be expected? People may say it's confusing or hard to understand, I'm quite the math/computer "geek", but I still don't think the dialog is all that difficult for people who aren't, and if it is, just ignore it and focus on the story and timeline, as it's more important than what they were making or how they made it.
Apparently most of the scenes were done in one shot and most of the cast had no acting experience, yet the acting was good and very believable, especially by the 2 stars (Shane Carruth & David Sullivan). I highly recommend turning on the Director's commentary afterwards, he talks about all the subtle moments in the movie that you may have missed (and by knowing the ending, understand why it's there). If you don't understand something, you should after watching it a second time with the commentary of him basically outlining the story. This movie's not for everybody, but anybody who loves Sci-Fi and got "12 Monkeys" without having to have it explained should understand and like "Primer".

I'd be lying if I said I completely understood this one. I was able to follow it most of the way, but the last third of the film left me scratching my head. On a confusion scale of 1 to 10, I give this one 9 "Memento"s. Nevertheless, I can't say I disliked it, since it's one of the few movies I've ever seen that treats time travel as a realistic science, rather than just ludicrous science fiction (which, of course, it is). Clearly this was written by an engineer, as it goes to great pains to make time travel seem almost plausible, by explicitly trying to circumvent those pesky paradoxes that always crop up in these types of stories. And it almost succeeds, but it's so darn confusing (which is another good sign it was written by an engineer), that it's hard to really tell. I'll give it five stars for making me think on the weekend, but subtract two of them for giving me a headache.
