You know in ten minutes what it takes Ed Norton what seems like an hour to figure out. You know not because you're intuitive or smart but because the film shows you and then expects you to be intrigued by how the clues lead Ed Norton to the conclusion given to you up front. I was bored and insulted for the first half of the over 2 hr running time. There was all kinds of superfluous backstory thrown in to tug at the viewer's heartstrings. Ed Norton wants to have Christmas with his ex-wife but she says no and his brother has a wife dying from cancer. Who cares?! Their life sucks, I get it! No need to spend so much time on it. I considered walking out at this point but then characters in the film figured out what everyone in the audience has known for an eternity and the film became kind of entertaining. Nothing surprising just good acting and what you expect from a film like this. No spoilers but the expected good cop vs bad cop showdown at the end was so silly I laughed out loud. This movie tries to do in two hours what 'The Shield' does so well in an entire season and it just doesn't work.

My beef with it? Its [again] working class heroes as the bad guys. And the implicit suggestion that if only those "lower" sort would clean up their act, we'd all be so much better off.
The fabric of our society is being torn down by guys in suits who've made off with TRILLIONS. Maybe it has nothing to do with this movie, but I couldn't help thinking about the real criminals out there today.

4/10Disappointing
This has a great cast and an interesting plot, but it is extremely boring. I thought the idea of police corruption & family ties would be an interesting story, but this went wrong somewhere. There is one scene half way through where I thought the movie lost all believability and I quit caring about the characters. Another problem I had was Ed Norton's performance. I'm a big fan of his, but this was an emotionless depiction of a cop caught between his family & the law. All in all I was extremely disappointed with this film. (1/27/9)
