This movie has such a lovely start. The characters of Ponyo and Susoke are terrific, so lovely and appealing, and the visual imagery of the movie is fabulous with its bright, luminous colors and constant flowing movement. There are a few weaknesses in the script, mainly in the never fully explained ramblings of Ponyo's wizard father. An inadvertently funny moment comes in the reaction of Susoke's mother when he informs her that this little girl is Ponyo, who used to be a fish. Without batting an eye, she says, "Life is mysterious and amazing, children. Now I need you to remain calm; we have work to do." Yep, pretty much nothing can flummox this woman. Ponyo is SUCH a lovable character, and we were so caught up in her story, that we had already decided to rate the movie 5 stars. The last 10 minutes, however, were a bit of a let down. It was never really clear what Susoke's big test was or if the father had some nefarious plan, and what it might be if he did. Still, we liked the message and the outcome. Overall the movie is highly enjoyable, and I'm sure we'll watch it again.
