"Platoon" is a decent movie but kinda forgettable. It was very celebrated at the time and I must admit that I was hyped up into thinking it was great back in 1986. It won Best Picture, right? It must be good. But quick, if you seen it, name one great scene from "Platoon". Can you? Just one. Hmm, me neither. (It probably doesn't help having Charlie Sheen as your lead or Oliver Stone as director. They've both sort of aged into walking punch lines.) To me, "Full Metal Jacket" is the more memorable '80s Vietnam movie. I can name a lot of great scenes in it. Kubrick took a more arch approach, as always, and NONE of his scenes look like they actually took place in Vietnam, it looks more like Dunkirk, but for some reason that movie has stuck in my brain while "Platoon" hasn't. I've probably rewatched "Full Metal Jacket" at least ten times. It's a great movie and it's really grown on me over the years while "Platoon" has dimmed. I rewatched it this week for the first time in years on TNT or TBS or something and fell asleep halfway through. It's not a terrible movie, but not as great as I had remembered. It's kind of ponderous. "Platoon" does have a great soundtrack but if you want to see a great '80's take on Vietnam, or war in general, rent "Full Metal Jacket". You can thank me later.

platoon
Platoon is a realistic presentation of the Vietnam War by director Oliver Stone, who himself fought in that war, even winning the Purple Heart. In focusing on a small fighting unit, the platoon, the film revolves around the camaraderie and the rivalry between the young American men sent to fight a war thousands of miles from home.
The conflict and the struggle to maintain one's humanity in light of the indiscriminate killing and the inherent corruption and chaos of war are personified in the character of young recruit Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen). Chris, a naive college student whose number did not come up in a lottery but rather chose to volunteer into service, is confronted with the atrocities and the madness of the Vietnam War. Fighting a hopeless battle against shadows in the Vietnamese jungles is a realistic depiction of the war, but at the same time it makes Vietnam seem almost like a dream, a nightmarish hell. In this hell, young Chris has to find his place, realize who his friends are and examine his loyalties and priorities, but more importantly examine his soul. Thus, the fight between the two sergeants, Elias and Barnes, over Chris is a fight between two father figures, one good and the other bad, over his soul, as both sergeants offer a different version of escape from the horrors of war. The film ends, as it started, with Chris being sent back home in a helicopter, leaving his conscience intact and the bloody battlefields and chaos of Vietnam behind. This loop raises the question whether Chris' stay in Vietnam was just a hallucination, a bad dream, yet the scars and the trauma to Vietnam and to an entire American generation will not soon be forgotten. The film won 4 Oscars, including an Oscar for directing and for Best Picture.

PLATOON-my point of view
I think that this is one of the best movies ever made about Vietnam war . Oliver Stone gives us wide-scale overview on the battle , but the uniqueness is that the movie is displayed in perspective of a very young and unexperienced not to say naive fresh soldier that has to handle both the battle, and his crew horror activities . I liked very much the fact that this rare creation is handling the horror activities that were made by the american forces during the war without justifying their activities , but by criticizing those activities made by soldiers that suffered from accumulative damage the long war so far from home caused them.
During the movie I felt like I was inside the movie , and that’s happens while the story , script and extraordinary filming angles takes you inside the fictive but at the same time so realistic scenario.

One of the most powerful war movies ever
It's on the Vietnam war, but beside the horrible sides of war the movie is more than that
It's the classic battle between good and evil, if it's on the battle field or inside each one of us ,and it's not always that clear who's who .
