Planet of the Apes, 1968

I'm really not sure how you can call this movie "shallow, dumb fun". This movie is about science, and specifically about the way we reject science, given our own prejudices. Witness: The NASA astronaut, planting an American flag in the soil of a planet 2000 years in his future. Another trained astronaut exclaiming "To hell with the scarecrows!" when he finds the water which will keep his crew alive. Dr. Zaius erasing the first evidence that the earthlings can communicate with his people in a written language. And the final blow, when evidence of an earlier, greater civilization is demolished at the request of [actually, the demand of] the scientific authorities. This is campy fun? No, this is great cinema. A film that has enriched our cinematic lexicon, you damned dirty ape!!
