Planet 51, 2009

This movie is predictable, and easy to follow. It's about a planet of green humanoid creatures who get "invaded" by a human astronaut. The story is okay, but I'd steer clear if you are uncomfortable with sexual references. For instance, towards the very end of the movie, the astronaut has a sheet over his lap. He stands up and exposes himself to a little boy, two teenage boys, and a teenage girl(we never see his bits). After catching an eyeful for a few seconds, one of boys says "That's a strange place to have your antenna!" I'm no prude by any means, but I certainly wasn't expecting that in this movie, or the comment about the girl alien needing plastic surgery. Otherwise this movie was okay. The plot flew along with nothing truly unique (you're sure to have seen a similar kids film before). The last ten or so minutes I actually felt myself zoning out. I liked the characters, especially because they were familiar, and I wasn't looking for a heavy film with lots of character development. I'd say if you want to occupy a child for a little while this might just work. But, if you're someone who isn't a kid, and still loves kids movies, I wouldn't recommend this one. 5/10

For the first production of a new Spanish animation company spun off from a video game developer, this is a pretty impressive accomplishment. Despite some predictability in the plot, the script is clever and funny with a sweet, positive message. The design nicely combines elements of crop circles, flying saucers, and Fifties Populuxe style. It is crisply rendered and eye-pleasing, yet lacks some subtlety in lighting and atmospheric effects. All told, a very enjoyable experience.
