Does sequel mean copy? Does it mean that you feel like you are watching the original only with a bit of a different story line? The makers of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest sure seem to think so. I feel like we have already seen this movie the last go around with Pirates. Let's recap, there is a Captain Jack Sparrow who is trying to get something from an otherworldly foe, he enlists the help of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann whose romance is being threatened by a overzealous British higher-up. Which movie am I talking about, the first or the second? Either one and that's what makes the 2 and 1/2 hours feel so long. That being said, Johnny Depp does an outstanding job reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow and his amazing ability to become that character really carries this movie. Much more of a humorous movie than the last with some genuine laugh-out-loud moments. The visuals in this movie are absolutely amazing. The Kraken is awesome but Davy Jones is the effect that really steals the show. The special effects team should win an Oscar for this. It is very apparent that this movie is meant to be a transition and it does a good job with that.
Nothing new in the way of inappropriate content. Typical for a PG-13 movie. Violence and language carry the rating.
Sequels have gotten the bad rap of being worse than the original, but in a few cases (such as Batman Begins and Xmen 2) they can be better than the original. For Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, neither of the above cases are true. This movie is just more of the original with a few running jokes thrown in for a laugh. Good transition movie that could have been so much better.

The acting in this film was good, with the exception of Mr. Bloom. The action scenes were ok, with the exception of a few of them. So, I have no clue why I didn't care for this film. But now that I look back on it I think the reason for me not to recommend this film is because it is no where near a great as the first one. This second one just lacked something the first one had, but then again I can't tell you what that would be. Maybe it was a little pushed and trying as hard as it could to be a grandiose picture like The Lord of the Rings. And that pretentiousness don't fly with me. They tried to be smart and get laughs were they could and tears in the other place. But the only thing that I really liked was the last person on camera, which gave me a good chuckle

Well, it's nowhere near the quality of the first film. The special effects are great, but that's not what makes a great movie in my opinion. The problem is that the story is so convoluted and the situations become a little too exaggerated. Near the end, as they swordfight in this huge rolling water wheel, I had lost my patience. In the end though, it's still a good movie but it suffers from a little too much glitz and a lack of story.

Have to say that I enjoyed this alot better than the first one. Yes there are slow spots (it is 2 1/2 hours) but it is worth the rent if you know what to expect. ALot of eye candy and an overall escape from the real world.

I watched this on Blu-ray, and I am glad that I chose that format over DVD. The sound and graphical quality was simply amazing.

I watched this on Blu-ray, and I am glad that I chose that format over DVD. The sound and graphical quality was simply amazing.
As far as the movie goes, it is too long, the latter part of the movie is a let-down, and the story is hard to follow, for this to be a Disney movie. On the other hand, the fight sequences and action are fun and exciting. The Pirates series reminds me quite a bit of the Indiana Jones movies. The main characters are well-suited for the job, but the supporting actors aren't so much, apart from Bill Nighy. This is still a solid movie, but it has its flaws.

If I were a special fx maker for this movie I would form a union and demand that all these cool creatures be put in a cool movie that takes itself seriously. I'm not against movies that don't take themselves seriously, just this one. a pirate movie should be filled with burly pirates, violence, thieving, partying, and booty.
I'll leave you with this: "you think that hurt? Try wearing a corset."
That proves these movies blow.

There were characters I was supposed to know who I did not know, jokes I was supposed to get that I did not get, and things I was supposed to remember that I did not remember. My head was spinning. There are, however, some really neat scenes, some awesome stunts and effects, and (worth a whole extra star rating) Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow.
