Disappointing. This story had potential, and probably a worthy topic to explore. But the end result felt a bit contrived and both my wife and I felt like the film was a little heavy-handed in trying to force certain ideas. I think they could take a que from Ponette about how to explore the complexities of childhood and children's worldviews.

This is a must-see family drama for fans of Lifetime Television as well as fans of things that suck. Boring and unimaginative, it took me three days to finish it because I kept falling asleep.

I stumbled upon this movie due to the presence of Patricia Clarkson (...who cast some sort of spell over me recently). Im so glad I gave it a chance!! First of all, the acting is superb. Ms. Clarkson usually steals the show, but here shes paired with two equally accomplished actresses - the bold and reliable Felicity Huffman, and newcomer Elle Fanning (Dakotas little sis). Elle turns in a stunning, near-flawless role as the imaginative and likeable Phoebe. Rarely will you see such complexity and nuance from a child actor. She never over-plays Phoebe like a smarmy little adult - which nauseates me about some child actors. If Fanning keeps her head on straight, shes gonna be big! Oddly, the same can be said about her character, Phoebe...
You cant help but cheer for the misunderstood Phoebe. Shes surrounded by a bunch of spoiled, instant-gratification generation brats. But poor Phoebe is battling more than just those little monsters. The movie seems to suggest that Phoebes behavior is the perfect foil for her schoolmates lack of imagination.
I believe this is the deeper message of Phoebe in Wonderland... It never tries to simplify the complex nature of parenting. Were not spoon-fed with easy answers. The movie plays fair to difficult questions and differing perspectives of parenting, while juxtaposing the fantasy world of Wonderland. Phoebes visions always feature the adults in her life. This is a metaphor of the relationship between a childs escapism and the many roles a parent must play. Its an odd structure for a seemingly mainstream movie. And while I appreciate that level of depth; this movie can be enjoyed on many levels because its pulled off so effortlessly. Its dramatic, with dark undercurrents; but ultimately a feel good movie that flows with a fun, kaleidoscopic warmth.
