Stunning
This is one of the most under appreciated movies of all time. Its disgustingly intruiging and sense provoking. Not many movies can engage your sense of SMELL and this movie does an amazing job at just that. The character is completely detached, yet you find yourself fascinated and almost rooting for him. The ending really catches you off guard to say the least. Amazing movie. MUST SEE

Unnecessarily long and unnecessarily weird for the most part. Then, in the last 20 minutes, the movie takes a right turn into crazy town, and becomes almost endearingly bizarre.
Plot aside, the film is gorgeously shot, well acted, and man will it...

Netfux sent me another defective disc so I will never know how this movie ended.
Plus they have no way to contact them and make a complaint - very customer unfriendly.
I'm not sure how much longer I'll continue to contract with them, with this...

Oh, peeyew! This one's a stinker from the get go. Dustin Hoffman seems to be the only one enjoying his role...and he is WAY over the top! I found this film utterly distasteful and am sorry I wasted the time watching. I found no redeeming qualities.

Five stars for the book I have loved for a long time and five stars for the movie that actually brought that book to life. This film is disturbing and unusual on many levels but like the book it you took you inside the world of a different kind of monster. While this took place in France during the 1700's this is not a subtitled film and was mostly forgotten while in the movies. Its not really a horror film but can be classified in many different categories. I read rumors that Orlando Bloom was supposed to play the lead in this film. That would have been a huge miscast since unknown Ben Whishaw caught the essence of the monster that was Jean-Paul. Remember that this film is truly bizzarre in every way but what a great film it was. Not only original but well acted and the roughly 2 hrs and 20 min. length went by quickly as the suspense grew stronger. Many films NEVER live up to the book but Perfume actually did on every level. Watching the final scenes unfold were how it was written and now there is no need to read the book just watch this movie and see for yourself how a small fragile man's love of smell was the strongest power of all.

Don't listen to the naysayers! This is almost certainly one of my favorite all-time movies, after only one viewing. Perhaps those that don't like the film have never experienced a passion of the sense of smell--or an unquenchable passion for the opposite gender (or the same gender, if that's your cup of tea), or the sad, lonely feeling that you are different from everyone else, that no one could understand you. Or, it is possible, that the naysayers want to see on the screen only the types of things they are already used to seeing, like explosions, fart jokes and sad relationship stories (don't get me wrong--I like those things too, but sometimes I want something MORE) and they didn't want to see massive orgies in town squares, dead bald women, rotting fish or men repeatedly smelling gorgeouos corpses. I, for one, loved every bile-filled, visceral, true dirty human image for what it was: a testament to our basest of desires, and our most divine aspirations.

While this movie did have it slow parts, overall it was a masterpiece. Amazing story of a unusual man with an extrodinary sense of smell who eventually becomes a murderer. I really got a feeling of alienation and loneliness from the main character....

Disappointing
The story is amazing. The book had me riveted and up all night reading, with its exquisite poetic prose and psychological suspense. Unfortunately the movie did not measure up and was not able to keep my interest. Poorly done.
