There are moments of absolute brilliance. The tracking shot of Kirk Douglas. The entire anthill sequence, in fact, is extraordinary. I think it is absolutely true that, like all Kubrick films, every shot has fascinating composition. (My favorite shot, unfortunately, would also be a spoiler, so I won't list it.)
Some of the acting, in particular from the prisoners, has **really** aged badly. Kirk Douglas, however, is awesome. He just has a certain charisma that's hard to describe but impossible to stop watching.
I think of this film as a kind of proto-Dr. Strangelove. So many of those themes appear here -- the insane nature of war, and, in particular, the insane nature of the bureaucrats who are totally out of touch with their humanity, who send others off to do they dying while they wait for the credit.
I thought the ending was especially effective.
I would have to recommend Breaker Morant and All Quiet on the Western Front to those who liked this film.

This is, besides Full Metal Jacket, the best anti-war movie ever.

Paths of Glory
I saw it a long time ago, and didn't find it very communicative in the 21 century. there is no question, however, about it's importance. perhaps one of the most convincing anti war films. the final scene is moving and absolutely unforgettable.

one of the early movies made by Stanley Kubrick and it is considered to be one of the best of it's genre (war). Kirk Douglas is great in his role as the commander who tries to save his soldiers and it is more than just a war movie with combats in it, it is also a psychological movie and one who raises important questions about the human nature. the film was made in 1957, i saw it recently and i thought it was great.
