The Passion of Joan of Arc, 1928

This movie is beyond review, beyond synopsis. I can inform you of its formal elements, but truly, desperately truly, it must be watched. Experienced. The version I was lucky enough to view featured a modern soundtrack, very epic and fitting. The performance of Falconetti reminds one of French Impressionist Cinema in that she makes you *feel* the young Joan's internal climate, even more than 80 years later. This is accompanied and enhanced by the exquisite camera work. Each shot, literally each shot, feels as though it has been thought out. The composition is tight (almost exclusively close ups) and claustrophobic, with much of the action taking place to the sides of the frame, or out of the frame entirely. This review is lacking in oh-so-many ways in that The Passion of Joan of Arc should be researched to genuinely appreciate the thought and skill that went into making such a masterpiece. Likewise, I simply cannot convey how transcendental it was to view. One might almost say it was a religious experience.

a rare masterpiece. delicatly and compationatly performed and depicted by pure cinematic means. chilling and moving, it's a must-see to any true cinephiliac.
