I am so over Gus Van Sant. I don't know why I keep giving his movies chances. They are all exactly the same: about 20 minutes of actual plot, and an hour and fifteen minutes of walking around, slow motion shots, or, in this case, skateboarding that looks like it was shot for some stupid MTV show. Vapid, self indulgent, and boring; this story went nowhere. The plot says it "takes a toll on his sanity." How could you tell? The kid didn't change facial expressions the entire movie. Skip this mundane, sorry excuse for an art-house film.

A great soundtrack is not a substitute for a plot, and slow-motion closeups of a kid's face do not constitute a character study. It's all very pretty to watch, but there's not much here.

During the first 15 minutes or so of "Paranoid Park," it seems as if Gus Van Zant's obsession with teenage boys has overwhelmed his film-making judgment. But then the method of the movie starts to kick in as we learn more and more about the story, which is not told chronologically. What is says about people today is not quite clear, but it's a powerful expression of adolescent anguish we can relate to. The characters, including the adults, come off as real and the film is quite compelling. There are no DVD extras.

The strength of the film is its attempt to genuinely portray teenage apathy, relationships, and communication, all of which admittedly are often mis-portrayed in mainstream Hollywood films. But its strengths end there in my opinion. Some of the characters' actions feel forced or exaggerated, as if the viewer is incapable of discerning something in between black and white. Ironically though, the many (I would say way too many) musical interludes are wide open for interpretation, and come across as time fillers more than insight into the story or characters.
There are two parallel stories in the film. The first is the accidental death of a security guard and the second is the main character's realization that long-term relationships are based on more than physical attraction. In the end though, I felt this film came up short on both fronts. Neither story was fully developed and instead the viewer feels left out like the parent of a disconnected teenager.

Paranoid Park
A film about a teenage boy dealing with the guilt and paranoia after accidentally killing a security guard. Gus Van Sant comes through with some very powerful scenes, that really strike you with the emotion that must be going through the boy's heart. These scenes are too few and too far between for this film to work for me. The acting is painful to watch. I could not believe anything that was happening or really connect to any character. It was as if the entire cast was delivering lines like they were doing a read through of the script for the first time. So, while there are definietley redeeming qualities about the film, the terrible acting and frustrating narrative make this a hard watch, and not in a rewarding way.
