Hauntingly Beautiful
This movie is a beautiful mix of the fantastic and the grimly real. It takes place just after the Spanish civil war, and weaves together two plots--the war and the fantasy--effortlessly. This is a fairy tale for adults. There's plenty of gore, so it's not for kids or those with weak stomachs. But it doesn't feel like a war film. The fairy tale is the dominant plot. Very dark and emotional. It's easy to forget it's not in my native language.

Pan's Labyrinth
I get shivers every time I watch this film, it's so good. There's some pretty brutal scenes, so it's not for children, but if you have any affection for a good old-fashioned fairy tale, you need to see this movie and see it now.

A dark & disturbing view of life in WWII Spain intermixed with the equally dark & disturbing fantasy world of a little girl.
Although most of this film could almost be called "girly" with somewhat mushy scenes revolving around a young girl, its R rated for good reason. The movie contains some nasty graphic violence here & there. Not a family movie to be sure. Mature audiences should enjoy this movie's darker sides though.

CONTAINS A SPOILER.....I tried very hard to try and find something that I liked about this film. I could not. It was dark and depressing beyond any movie that I have seen recently. Why the heroine was shot and killed in the movie I guess I will never understand, it seemed as if there was meanness and intolerance and acts of depravity just for depravities sake. At the end of the movie I just tried to understand what the filmmakers were trying to say, " Mankind is so mean and evil and there is no hope of redemption or happiness. I rated this movie with ONE STAR.

One of my "go to" movies
The easiest way to sum this movie up is simple, it's an Adult Fairytale.
The characters are deep, the cinematography is beautiful and the story is superb.
Some of my favorite aspects of the movie is the color grading and lighting used to set the mood of the film. It starts out colorful and misleading to the true grittiness of the story, but quickly changes it's feel as the story progresses.
I also love how certain shots from the beginning of the movie loop back further into the film, but with a different outcome - it's breath taking.
If you appreciate a world filled with fantasy, characters that you come to love (or hate), amazing editing and terrific acting, then Pan's Labyrinth will quickly become one of your "go to" movies!
