With this film, Solondz again makes his viewers squirm more than most suspense directors do. Many times, sometimes simultaneously, this movie is funny, odd, vulgar and horrifying. His main character, a girl named Aviva (get it a palindrome), and her goal of motherhood leads us down a slippery path through pedophilia and the abortion debate.
With eight actresses of different age, race and body style sharing the role of Aviva in various scenarios, seemingly without explanation, the film teeters on the edge of farce. However, Solondz unique ability to tell this strange story with wit and compassion only reinforces his message about how perceptions of personal change are delusional. Not for all tastes, but worth a look.

Palindromes provides a look into the mind of a young mixed up youth trying to find something that can never happen. This film is full of shocking ideas and controversial topics which if done properly (like in this movie) can cause the viewers to get a sense of realness. Life is shocking and controversial so making movies that are in your face make it more real. The unique characters are easily lovable and relatable to many people. This movie deserves to be watched by everyone at least once. You don't have to love it just watch it with an open mind.

Solondz' attempts to get to the heart of the gritty, dirty nature of human existence surely reaches it's pinnacle with "Palindromes", a film about a girl (named Aviva...get it?) who is desperate to get pregnant, although her parents have yet to tell her that she's barren. You can imagine the hilarity that ensues. What Solondz's storytelling lacks in couth, it more than makes up for in over-the-top truth telling. How deep can you look into the rancid soul of humanity before you puke? My only complaint with the film is that I question the existence of the "Christian" family that Aviva falls in with. Is Solondz making a statement about religion? I would more than welcome such a thing, but here, if he's trying to say something, it was too vague and unfocused, because I have no idea what the point of that whole side story was. Oh, I almost forgot, multiple actresses (and one actor) portray the character of Aviva, and they are from all walks of life (if you didn't know that going in to the film, you may become confused), which is a clearly discernable statement: the film isn't about one girl, or just white girls, or just girls: it's about all of us. All stinking dirty human us. I dare you to find me a Solondz film that ends with any hope or love for the human race. Which--while it may be easy to dislike our species--it sure takes balls to say it so loud, and so well.
