Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, 2008

See Lucky steal. Steal, Lucky, steal. See Lucky fall in love. See Lucky give everything back after several years have passed. Is that really all the director had to say? This would be a Robin Hood story, if Robin Hood had robbed just so he could have shiny bikes and cars for himself. The story might have been richer if Lucky a.k.a. "Super-Chor" (Abhay Deol) had expressed anything but a blank, bemused facial expression throughout the film. It would also have helped to have a soundtrack more interesting than hip-hop (Hindi or Punjabi, I'm not sure) detailing his every (shallow) thought. After reading the ideas of others, I've tried to become more self-aware why I am not so crazy about this popular movie. 1. This is a dreaded coming of age movie, which I didn't realize when I rented it, and I'm old enough I'd rather start aging in the other direction. (I really liked Breakfast Club, but I was in my early 20's when I watched it.) 2. The slideshow sequences that pepper the movie make it seem like the director is just too lazy to show character development on screen and breaks the show-don't-tell rule. 3. Sonal (Neetu Chandra), who seems too grounded to be impressed with guys that are all flash, turns into a girl impressed with guys that are all flash, with no explanation of the abrubt character shift. I guess their relationship is supposed to symbolize how she knows he would steal the moon for her if he could. He can't steal the moon, so he does the next best thing and steals a bunch of other crap. 4. The movie is said to really capture East Delhi, and I have never been there, so that would not mean much to me. My recommendation for a good Abhay Deol movie is Ahista Ahista.
