The Other Guys, 2010

I like Will Ferrell, but Im not so sure about these big budget action yuk fests. I didnt laugh very much at Tropic Thunder or Pineapple Express. I chuckled more here, but still, action effects and comedy arent always a good mix. For instance, there is a joke at the beginning. (Spoiler) Samuel L. Jackson and The Rock jump off a building, echoing a scene out of Lethal Weapon (I think), but instead of miraculously surviving like all good action heroes, they just splat onto the sidewalk, dead. Thats funny, but the way its shot- the camera following them in slow motion, like in a real action picture- sort of ruins the joke. You see it coming a mile away. When they do hit the pavement, with comic squishing sounds, its more creepy than funny. That happens a few times in this, where it is making fun of things its also indulging in, and the joke is drowned out by the effects. I thought nearly all of Tropic Thunder was like that and, come to think of it, much of Ghost Busters. Anyway, theres still a lot of laughs in this, and if you are one of those degenerate mouth breathers who loves Will Ferrell, like me, this is on par with oh..say Talledega Nights. The funny jokes outnumber the really dumb ones about 2 to 1. Mark Wahlberg is surprisingly amusing as Ferrells partner. 3 stars.
