Wow, what's not to like? Donald Sutherland, Mary Tyler Moore, Judd Hirsh, Timothy Hutton, M. Emmet Walsh top the cast. I get the plot I really do. The parents are still numb from the death of their eldest son and their other son is recovering from that, his suicide attempt and is trying to pull his life back together. It was just so BORING. Absolutely nothing happens until the last 20 minutes and that isn't a big action scene, it's simply a conversation. Numb is the key word for the movie. They drive around, they see a play, they eat dinner, they go to school, they really, really bore the audience to numbness. It's the way your rear feels when you go to a game and spend three hours sitting on concrete bleachers.

A powerful drama about sensitive family issues that teaches us we should never have "favorites" in our family circle. A young man (Oscar winner Timothy Hutton) is tramatized after losing his older, more popular brother in an accident. Mary Tyler Moore gives a stunning performance as the cold and unforgiving mother while Donald Sutherland plays the always-helping dad in this superbly acted drama that truly touches the human heart and teaches us about forgiveness and where it should start. "Ordinary People" knocked off heavily favorited "Raging Bull" for Best Picture, and Robert Redford pulled an upset over Martin Scorsese for director in 1981. A must see film.

too ordinary people
since ordinary people so many movies have dealt with death in the family which leads to dysfunctionality. i would like to say that non of them managed to move me as much as this one however that wouldn't be true. given that OP is a very moving picture it stays well with in the naiveness of it's time and doesn't offer very much to today's audience. if you want to see good uneuphemist dysfunctional family drama look into ordinary poeple or moon light mile.
