Open Your Eyes, 1997

You can't be expected to really take in the great acting in this when the characters are busy pouring their existence out to you, but every 5 seconds you have to read the subtitles. I love foreign films, but for the first time, I'm faced with a Vanilla Sky, a movie I really liked for it's ideas and unforgettable story, but didn't for Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz before she felt comfortable enough with English. This movie is much better, the actors do a great job, but this is like reading the book. The movie isn't old enough to call a classic and not different enough to put it's ideas above its ripoff. It IS smarter, but there's moment the English remake can hit that it can't...important ones. If I wouldve seen this first I'd say Hollywood ruined it. But time has ruined this too. Neither meets the hype of what could've. Now it's just a game of pick your poison.
