Glorious, gorgeous, and operatic. I can see why it was a lot shorter when it was released, but those long, slow establishing shots are cinematic art at its best. Dozens of times throughout the movie I would freeze the frame and just marvel at the beauty of the shot. One of the best westerns ever made; possibly Henry Fonda's best role; absolutely Charles Bronson's best role ever. And check out Claudia Cadinale -- hubba HUBBA!

This is a film that is easy to admire, but hard to watch. There are times when the film lacks direction and has no idea what to do with itself so it drags things out to an unnecessary length, and it becomes pretentious at times. With that said, Once Upon a Time in the West is a beautiful, flawed masterpiece. It's a feast for the senses, and the story is engaging, building itself up to an unforgettable climax where Harmonica and Frank (Charles Bronson and Henry Fonda respectively) face off with one another. Leone finally strips away the glitz and glamor of the old west and in its place shows us the true, murdering side of it all. Well worth the rent.
