Once Upon a Time in America, 1984

How do you get away with starting and ending a movie on a weird note, when the movie is 4 hours long? So many times the movie would get stale with it's direction. Scenes would go on until they were uncomfortable. You could tell that either the director needed to get more creative or the plot needed to get a lot more dramatic, but neither happened. This isn't one of those lost epics, because each actor goes on to do much better things (Pesci and De Niro in Goodfellas, and with Woods in Casino) I've never watched a movie this long before and at the end asked myself, was that even good at all? De Niro's the only thing worth seeing in this, he's in it for maybe an hour, and doesn't ever really play this kind of character again, but that's just not enough. 3 stars for a 1/4 of the movie being incredible.

an amazing epic story of 'rise and fall' played out by a wonderfuly talented ensemble cast. the impressive historic recreation contributes to the film's strong sence of realism. this film is one of the greatest of the 80's and should be layed out side by side with the godfathers, raging bull and others of their kind.
