I saw this movie in the theater last weekend...loved it. At first it appears to be just a goofy comedy, but in all reality it is quite dark. The poor main character has a tough life. I will be renting this when it comes out

4-10-09. Rogen is an actor best suited in half-hour roles. He shouldn't be on camera much longer than that because his delivery is the same, the jokes grow tiresome and even he begins to try too hard to sell a joke. Observe and Report is very funny for 45 minutes. Then it takes a turn. Rogen plays Ronnie, a mall cop who is obsessed with cosmetics girl Brandi (Anna Faris). A parking-lot flasher targets any woman, but when he gets Brandi, Ronnie takes it upon himself to comfort her, find the "pervert" and simultaneously make Brandi fall in love with him. The snag comes when an actual cop, Detective Harrison (Ray Liotta), takes over the case. Ronnie and Harrison battle to keep control. The movie twists to the dark side about the same time Ronnie delivers a Rohrschach-like (from Watchmen) monologue. Ronnie wants to be the hero. What he becomes is a tragic character that is not funny nor charming. Instead, he is rather sad and pathetic. The movie drags out until the final scene. For some, the last moments will save the movie. It made me roll my eyes. Jody Hill wrote and directed Observe and Report. He did the same for The Foot Fist Way. That film is a cult phenomenon that appeared in very limited theaters last year. He tries to reach a wider audience with this one, but I think will still miss with the masses. The first act is great; The second act drags; The third act almost makes up for it. The laughs stop for too long in this one, leaving the audience wondering, "where's the funny?" Three stars. tinyurl.com/caa5c8

A dark comedy that is more dark than comedy. It has some funny moments but they are sparsely distributed. It's nice to see Seth Rogen stretching a little, but he is stripped of most of his charm in the process and while things remain focused on his character, a pretty decent cast is left with little to do. Perhaps for South Park fans, to whom meanness equates with humor, this film may be considered high art. In actuality, it is a little better than average. Watchable, but nothing special.

About as dark as a Dark Comedy can get. Rogen plays a mall cop with inflated delusions of self and a side helping of Bi-Polar attitudes.
The laughs are of the uncomfortable kind, the story a sad but mesmerizing journey. The "comedy" here is not of the cute and cuddly kind by a long shot.
Roger is perfectly cast as a man who over-compensates in all the worst ways.
If you are a fan of Jody Hill's Foot Fist Way or the HBO series East Bound & Down, you will have an idea that the "hero" of this tale is a richly drawn, but frightening example of a man who is just barely hanging on to reality.
This is not going to be a film for everybody, nor is it in any way family friendly.
But its the story of a train-wreck of a human that compelled me to watch.
