CONTAINS SPOILERS... A movie about a school teacher (Cate Blanchett) who loses her way and acts out on sexual impulses with a young student. Another older school teacher (Judi Dench) also acts out on her sexual impulses and tries to take advantage of the younger teacher's dilemma. This was a difficult movie to watch because it dealt with child abuse. Cate Blanchett was spectacular in this role, and so was Judi Dench. I recommend this movie with this warning, "You have to be prepared to see the Lead Cate Blanchett being sexual with someone who is under age" From what I have read about this film Cate had a difficult time with this film because she was in the skin of a child molester, not a comfortable place to be. And she was glad when the project was over. I watched it a couple of times, because of the strong performances. I hope this review helps you to decide whether you would like to watch this movie or not. I gave it 5 STARS.

Not my type of movie but very glad I watched this excellent film. Loved everything about this first rate film and you have to remember that this is a film not only about a student teacher affair but mainly about lonely human beings and how their actions effect everyone around them. Only 1 hr and 30 min this film packs in everything whhile not rushing the film. Dont let the topic turn you off and see this film.

No? OK, its your rental, but this film has the same dark sense of humor that "Closer" had. If you found yourself going, "I hate these people! I hate this movie!" You might want to move on. Hit that "MOVIES YOU'LL LOVE" button. That button is great.
Yes? You liked "Closer"? Well then sit down you are in for a treat! 30 minutes into this film I was laughing out loud. Why was I laughing? Because Patrick Marber, the screenwriter, is a master of black comedy. Judi Dench is delectably evil in her petty machinations. Yes you will feel awful at her desperation and her destruction of Cate Blanchett, but then it will continue in a riotous way.
OK let's review, you like black comedy and Patrick Marber? RENT THIS!
You don't get a laugh out of people treating other people badly? DO NOT RENT THIS!

Notes on a Scandal
An interesting film that deals with obsession and forbidden love. The problem is that it gets a little superficial. Judi Dench's character becomes too stereotypical in my opinion.
