One of the Greatest Movies Ever Made
the movie is set in recent times and the biggest character in this movie is the dirty money that everyone wants. Along with that the corrupt people who want it such as the Corporation who hires Anton and the drug cartels that chase Llewellyn for it. The movie also shows these innocent characters of which I guess you can place Llewellyn who get caught up in what’s happening and are murdered. The movie talks about the lack of justice in modern times where wild men run free and beget other wild men. The movie has a lot to do with principle and destiny as well. Whereas these attributes aid Anton the assassin in obtaining his goals in life they don’t aid the sheriff. Ed’s necessity to follow the laws which guide him prevent him from obtaining justice. Llewellyn and the innocent people that are killed follow these standards somewhat, however there interest in cutting deals to save themselves leads to their demise. Unlike most westerns this movie is not about conquering the wilderness and the people in it rather it is about overcoming the wildness of the inner psyche and how the lack of control leads to failure.

SPOILER ALERT.....NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (some people say) is an ALLEGORY.I will admit I also see it as an allegory. Anton Chigurh. (DEATH) is played by Javier Bardem. The Hunter, Llewellen Moss played by (Josh Brolin). Carla Jean, Llewellen's wife is played by Kelly MacDonald. The Hunter stumbles on a drug deal gone bad. A truck load of Heroin, and 2 million Dollars in cash. Llewellen is not interested in the Drugs, but he takes the money and makes a dash for the Border. Death is stalking him. The Hunter is being Hunted. On two separate occasions Death makes an offer in the form of a Coin-Toss to postpone immanent Death. Death Makes an offer to the Hunter that if he brings him the money he will spare his wife, he cannot save himself, but he has the opportunity to save the life of his wife. Some people say the Carla Jean represents (Free Will) she refused to take part in something she considered to be a farce. The Sheriff Played by (Tommy Lee Jones) is the philosopher who is trying to make sense of the carnage. He cannot make sense of it. hence the title "NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN" The title is from the first line of "Sailing to Byzantium" by William Butler Yeats, The Sheriff comes face to face with Death in a tiny Motel Room, but he cannot see him, therefore he is saved. The Hunter is killed by the Drug Dealers, which are the agents of Death. The Sheriff retires leaving all the Death and Carnage for someone younger to deal with. I loved this movie. I recommend watching "THE MAKING OF--NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN" which is an extra on the DVD. Javier Bardem received an OSCAR for his efforts. This is a great movie. I gave it 5*****STARS.

The story is brilliant and twisted, finally raising the question of whether we can really fully understand the dark criminal mind.

I went in to this movie with very high expectations and it actually delivered. This is one of the best paced movies I have seen in quite some time. Every scene is intriguing to watch and every performance is riveting. Javier Bardem definitely stands out as one of the best hitmen to ever appear on screen. He alone would make this movie worth watching. Fortunately, the rest of the movie is great. Definitely worth paying the ridiculous prices at a theater to watch. The cinematography is awesome on a big screen.

A bleak story, with very effective matching cinematography; this will not be used to promote tourism to Texas. The film is violent and there are some stomach turning moments, but that violence is an integral part of the film. The movie is about the violence in the world and poses the questions whether it is getting worse or has always been with us. The final scene does seem oddly disconnected from the rest of the film and feels as though it could be removed, leaving the penultimate scene in its place as a more effective climax.
Overall, a film that fascinated and impressed me, one that I could watch again.

For the first three quarters, this Coen brothers movie is a tight cat and mouse thriller pitting Bardem against Brolin. For me it's as well executed a chase thriller as I've seen in years, maybe decades. It had my nerve endings bouncing like super balls and little puffs of smoke whistling out my ears. I was worked up. Bardem plays a diabolically memorable villian pursuing Brolin and a briefcase full of money. It's tense and suspenseful and doesn't rely on flashy quit cuts to generate excitement. The Coens technique this time is muted but assured and not as self-conscious as usual. Along the way there are a dozen or so minor characters - a trailer park manager, a gas station owner, a woman lounging at a pool, etc.- that all leave a strong impression and add to the atmosphere. I can't recall another movie with this many exceptional "little" performances. But then, around the 1 1/2 hour mark, the film gears down abruptly, and I do mean abruptly, into a more cerebral meditation on evil, and nostalgia for a far begone moral past, glimpsed briefly through the foggy mists, the dewey dews and the bemisty mists, far ago, long away like sands through the hourglass, these are the days of our... ahh, nevermind. It gets deep, I'll leave it at that. My pulserate returned to normal sinus rhythm, I wiped the blood off my earlobes and I just didn't feel the last quarter of the movie worked as well as the rest. I know the Coen brothers were remaining true to Cormac McCarthy's vision in the book - that's fine - but I'm not convinced it's very cinematic. A tense suspenser but, um, literary. You've been warned.

Winner of the 2008 academy award for best picture,No Country is faithful to its source as an almost word for word adaptation of the original McCarthy novel.Taking place in Texas with characters as big as the state itself, this masterpiece is a hunt driven by determination and the color green. The plot deals with the discovery of cash from a drug deal. When Moss comes across the money his first thought is to take it a run,had he known about Anton Chigurh who would have thought otherwise. When word of the deal gets to the police thats when Tom Bell comes into play as the retiring sheriff looking to help Moss out.
Many great supporting roles fill out the rest of the movie from Mosss girl Carla Jean(Kelly MacDonald)to Carson Wells(Woody Harrelson),a man tracking down Anton, but the men to watch a the trio of Brolin,Jones, and Bardem.Together this three piece together a film so gritty and sound that theres no denying the praise.Sweat, blood, and money seem to be the nature of things in this thrill-ride and as long as the want is there the sacrifice is worth it.Brolin plays Moss so well,a man just trying to take his piece of the sweet life.Jones is there as the man void of all luxuries and only trying to bring resolve to Moss. Then theres Bardem bring home the oscar for his turn as the evil force of nature looking only to do as he was set out to do,bring the money back where it belongs.
Making decisions to do the right thing is the theme of the film.Making the decision to steal brings forth consequences and Bardem portrays that intuitive evil some are born with. This darkness take hold of those who do wrong and so we should be content with our lives, this much is told through Tom Bell. Some are born to kill and those who arent need to stick to their guns. So when the choice between right and wrong is placed in front of you can you call it?

While perhaps too slow-paced for some, No Country For Old Men is a masterful film, featuring some of the tensest moments in recent cinema history. Josh Brolin, Tommy Lee Jones, and especially Javier Bardem as the singularly obsessive and frightening killer, turn in exceptional performances.
Yes, it's all very heavy- but it's also incredibly well-crafted, and not entirely humorless. Needless to say, if youre looking for an uplifting experience, this is not the movie for you. However, if you want a film that is both subtly unnerving and psychologically engaging, then this is one that you will likely enjoy- and never forget.

The cast is outstanding. Javier Bardem is creepy as the amoral killer, and Josh Brolin is effective as the welder who gets in over his head, and the sheriff is a role that Tommy Lee Jones was born - no, lived out his whole life - to play. The photography is exquisite. The early shot, where the deputy is blithely talking to his boss while, in the background, we can see Bardem freeing his hands to kill the deputy, is downright Hitchcockian. I think the problem with the film is that the Coens' disdain for filmic conventions and their affinity for ambiguity leaves intentional plot holes that need to be filled. None of the three main characters end up confronting the others. At the end, we're not completely sure who's still alive. Very well done film, but ultimately frustrating for the viewer - which was probably their intent all along.
