The mood of Night of the Living Dead is scary, rough, and suspenseful. The plot centers around isolation, zombies, and imprisonment or confinement. It is an independent and horror movie. Stylistically, Night of the Living Dead is gory. In approach, it is serious. It takes place, at least partly, on a farm. Night of the Living Dead is set in Pennsylvania. It happens in the 1960s. Summary of Night of the Living Dead

George Romero's Night of the Living Dead is a low-budget, homegrown classic that had great difficulty finding a distributor at the time of its release in 1968, and has since become one of the most influential horror films of all time. (Aside from its visceral impact years before realistic gore became the fashion, the film is also important for its portrayal of a black man as the protagonist during a time when race was an extremely sensitive issue in the United States.) The plot is simple: seven people secluded in a Pennsylvania farmhouse face relentless attacks by reanimated corpses seeking to eat their flesh. The group, which includes a married couple and their daughter, a pair of young lovers, and an African-American man, try to keep their sanity as the living dead keep trying to enter the house. Radio news reports tell of the plague taking over the eastern United States, while the ever-decreasing band of survivors rapidly loses ground in the battle to both keep peace with one another and stay alive.

In all of George Romero's "Dead" films but the last, a small group is trapped in an improvised stronghold, fending off an advancing horde of undead. Here the character interaction, the slow-burn momentum, and the gobsmack ending are all better done... Read and rate it

A.O. Scott wrote about this 60s film before the 2008 election. Some sort of fun, he implied: with a thin black man as hero, can the (white) characters around him rely on him to be their leader? Irresistible angle, so I got it, not expecting much. Starts as merely enjoyably cheesy. As it develops, you simply accept a calm articulate (black) man as a sort of stock U.S. movie hero. Now for more of the deeper "Invasion of the Body Snatchers"-style re-interpretive fun that Scott just hinted at. Terrified "normal" people finally listen to a 1940s-model radio to learn what outside world is thinking. Hours--symbolically, decades of history--pass. They finally (why the wait?) turn on the new-era TV and then it dawns on you: this is how 60s TV covered civil rights. These living dead are activated by "radiation" (TV transmissions?). Some zombies are even oddly pleasant looking: the stockbroker cigarette ad, the housewife detergent ad, grandma in her nightie, etc. Stepford people. The twist: rednecky, sheriff types are strangely juxtaposed allies of the nice people. More reversal: "outsiders" are unaware of the good the black leader is doing inside. [Also, not unlike desperate late-19th c. agrarian white populists who made brief alliance with African-Americans to balance the scales of life by social forces beyond their control. Racism eventually re-asserted itself & the alliance broke up soon--neither group achieved much improvement in life in 1880-1910.] Here, the force of law & order that we root for (despite resembling those on 60s TV spraying fire hoses) is the beefy white sheriff, who mistakenly kills the hero. The martyr's body goes on the communal pyre of Instamatic-frozen-faced zombies. Made in '68, I don't know if it was after the death of M.L. King, but the parallel is powerful. Hope for a happier ending to our current American story. And a pretty good campy (and very competently-made) movie for those who just want to enjoy the 60s schlock. 11.08
