Network, 1976

While Network instantly dates itself with the costumes and hairstyles, the film itself is surprisingly relevant. Network's script and acting was phenomenal. It's very refreshing to watch a film that doesn't seem to cater to the lowest common denominator. Things moved along at a fast paced, and the characters talked quickly. The film didn't slow down to explain every little nuance of the television business, it just grabbed the story and ran with it. Nearly everyone seemed to really embrace their parts. Actors the likes of William Holden, Peter Finch, and Robert Duvall give some of their best performances ever here. Faye Dunaway seemed a bit overzealous. Every time she was on screen I wanted someone to smack her and tell her to calm down. Maybe her acting fit the part, but she definitely rubbed me the wrong way. As strong as the acting and writing may have been, in the end I didn't care. I reached a point where I was only watching the movie to finish it, not to actually see what happened. The characters felt real, and I think that's what made them boring. Ultimately, I still hate television for exactly the reasons portrayed in Network: they exploit anyone and everyone just to make a buck. But this lack of respect for the business equates to a lack of interest in anything television related, and that means I didn't enjoy Network.
