Altman's best. It annoys me when I read critics, or bloggers that assert that Nashville is a dated masterpiece. It is MEANT to be dated. It tackles the '70s head on perceptively, with a greater scope than any movie of the time. It is intended to be a time capsule. Certainly it spawned a host of bloated ensemble hamfests like "Magnolia" and "Crash", but it can hardy be blamed for that. Without it "The Wire" is probably not possible. It's not a dated masterpiece, it's a masterpiece about that time- Bicentennial America. I grew up then and it feels more authentic to the time than any other picture to me. The one legitimate criticism of this movie is it's portrayal of the country music industry as just shameless, flag waving panderering. It wouldn't actually get that bad for anothers 25 years. But if you want to sink into the decade more deeply than that stupid Ashton Kutcher show, this is the movie to see.

Isn't this supposed to be the movie that shows how talented the director, Mr. Altman is? Here's my Nashville diary:

Isn't this supposed to be the movie that shows how talented the director, Mr. Altman is? Here's my Nashville diary:
~30 min - fell asleep. Started over.
~1h30 min- cute scene about singers being drowned out. Point?
~1h39m - Keenan Wynn's wife is dead. Wish I'd been given a reason to care.
~1h50m - There's no difference between an annoying singer and a person playing an annoying singer.
~1h57m - Bit late to be extending this story about Lily Tomlin's hubby, ain't it? Even half an hour earlier and I might have cared.
~2h02m - What I said about annoying singers? Again.
~2h08m - Showing me the annoying singer urged to strip doesn't mean she sang any better.
~2h10m - She doesn't even strip well. This would probably be loaded with pathos if I had been given any reason to care about the character.
~2h18m - Oh, has he remembered the political theme after all this time?
~2h29m - The sweaty guy who's been foreshadowed all though the damn picture commits an unpleasantness? What a sham surprise.

This isn't to say there isn't some good acting here. Henry Gibson, Lily Tomilm, Ned Beatty, Karen Black, and others do their best. But their performances are embedded in the lard of a really long, overindulgent, and ultimately bad flick. And, unless he was being blackmailed by the editor, the blame is Altman's.
