Before I saw this film, I was expecting some decent throwaway romantic comedy with a bit of music.
Even though that's exactly what I got, that doesn't mean it's totally a waste of time.
The film has the basic romantic comedy setup (The two meet, fall in love, break up, then fall in love again), but what elevates this film is the chemistry between its two leads, Drew Barrymore and Hugh Grant.
The film does contain a few interesting ideas about the music biz, but they're never developed further, obviously. (Then, this would be a documentary.
In summary, it's true, this is the fluff the trailers made you think, but it's enjoyable, feel-good fluff, cinematic comfort food.

I really wanted to like this more. What that means is while I give it 3 stars, I'd rather say it was okay rather than I liked it. It's supposed to be a romantic comedy, and overall I found it not all that terribly funny. There were humorous situations, but to me at least, the movie felt stiff and contrived. I'd still recommend it for others to see, but in my opinion, it doesn't rank as one of the better romantic comedies for either Grant or Barrymore.

Music and Lyrics was much better than I expected it to be. Usually I am not a fan of Hugh Grant, but this movie changed that for me. He was brilliant in the role, as a struggling '80s singer trying to make a comeback. Even better was Drew Barrymore, who also surprised me and made me laugh quite a bit. The movie was very clever in places, but sometimes the story got off track and lost its creativity. The soundtrack is great, and the music is believable, so that helps things out. I really liked this, and would watch it again.

A light, fun, and eminently predictable Chick Flick, but if you like that sort of thing you'll love this one. A relaxing movie -- except when your eyes are tearing from laughing at some of Hugh Grant's lines. Very enjoyable!
