An outstanding Sam Rockwell performance highlights this psychological thriller set in a science fiction environment. Although elements of the plot are derived from the likes of Blade Runner, 2001 and Silent Running, it is a solid first film from David Bowie's son, Duncan Jones. The mood of the film is well set by an atmospheric score composed by Pop Will Eat Itself's Clint Mansell.

:\ I'm a late 80s-baby things are different now, because my generation traded in sci-fi for superhero. I'm not positive this movie belongs to my generation. This is indie sci-fi at it's best and the closest we've got these days are Wall-E and Sunshine. (I guess you could throw in The Mist) This is the kind of inner looking, natural pace, personal movie you don't much find anymore in indie movies in general, let alone a movie like this.
Almost every time my gen has tried they get big loud movies surrounding these small personal ones, like Donnie Darko or A Scanner Darkly or even The Hulk and Terminator: Salvation. They don't make them like this anymore.
It's easy to say this reminds me of Solaris, but this does a lot more with a lot less of a budget. And then there's Sam Rockwell. This isn't Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood, but I can't remember an actor holding his own for so long since Colin Farrell in Phone Booth, and I promise Sam does it much better.
Sam just sinks into his job so easily, that you stop wondering if he can pull it off 10 minutes in. It's one man, for the most part, pulling the the together with just himself. If you're lucky enough to have an indie theater in or near your town SEE THIS.

This eerie drama harks back to sci-fi movies of the late 60s and early 70s that explored inner as well as outer space. That intorspective ananlysis of the isolated human is always a fascinating dynamic. Moon also examines the nature of the human experience in isolation, but more importantly how the future will really just be more of what we already have today.
How is it that Sam Rockwell, one of the finest actors on the planet, has yet to get the notice he deserves? Sam Rockwell was great in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. Those are some long titles to be sure. Sam Rockwell is totally engaging as Sam Bell.
Moon returns to the artful use of old-school miniatures rather than computer graphics, Moon engages the eye as much as the mind. Here's a canny director who doesn't let technical prowess overwhelm his sure, resourceful sense of human drama and character. I saw Duncan Jones short Whistle years ago and found it totaly intriguing. I look forward to more work from him in the future.
Clint Mansell's eerie score evoked wonderfully space associated imagery which added to the feel of the movie. Before watchign just remember this is an indie not a blockbuster popcorn flick. And how could you miss this stellar feature?

Give Sam Rockwell the Oscar. My rating would be higher, but I always deduct half a point from movies I see in the theater to account for any afterglow effect that might have boosted my experience in this at home viewing world. The trailer is well cut but it doesn't convey Moon's existential bent, and while the film is very heavy it can still be enjoyed on numerous levels because it succeeds on all of them.

Best pure science fiction movie Ive seen in years. Sam Rockwell is so underrated as an actor; he was fantastic in this and I think he should have been awarded for his outstanding performance. Highly recommended.

Absolutely superb, one of the best true sci-fi films of recent years and one of my personal top 5 films of 2009. Sam Rockwell's performance is award-worthy IMO. Director Duncan Jones (son of David Bowie!) has tremendous visual flair and powerful insights. Among other things, the film is an artful visual/thematic homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey, with nods to other sci-fi classics as well. Quite impressive for a first feature. I look forward to more of his work.

A brilliant if quietly enthralling mystery, set in the philosophically supple science fiction format. After a bit, I thought it was an honorable homage to "2001: A Space Odyssey," but then concluded after another half hour or so---with admiration for its skill---that it is essentially a re-make of that classic movie. But if you've never seen that old movie, or have forgotten it, just enjoy this movie on its own terms. Although the writer-director credits lots of old sci-fi movies as inspiration, he rather too-obviously avoids over-mentioning "2001"----maybe the debt was too uncomfortably close. No harm done, really. There are plenty of fresh and intriguing insights and twists to make for a lot of speculation right down to the last second (and keeps it far from being a line-for-line duplication of "2001"). It could be interpreted in many ways, ranging from a modern eco-political parable, to a more abstract musing on the question of identity---and the myth of the eternal return which has recurred in all recorded human history, in all cultures. I preferred to tend toward the latter, but no need to pin it down. Enjoy the originality and intrigue in all (or just some) of its many layers. An unexpected and beguilingly unpretentious treat. A relaxed Sam Rockwell is great at casually giving double vision a new meaning. You'll wonder about it quite a while when it's done. 1.10

Under normal circumstances I might have reviewed this DVD, but when NF implemented the new DVD page detail design they removed friends' ratings, top 10 lists and the ability to send movie notes. That made it harder for me and others to find movies we'll like. If you are reading this, please call NetfIix at 1 (866) 716 0414 and ask them to give us the community features back. I apologize for this non-review.

The independent, science fiction film "MOON" has a lot to offer movie lovers who may not ordinarily seek out either indies or sci-fi. Its basic story involves a lone man supervising an automated lunar mining camp who's nearing the end of his three-year contract and longing to get home to earth. After an accident in his lunar rover, he manages to return to camp only to find another person, much like himself. Is it a clone? Is his imagination running riot? Is his computer-aide an evil genius like HAL in "2001"? The clever plot is never contrived, and grows more and more compelling. Standout acting by Sam Rockwell makes this film a tour de force. And although it was shot on a budget, you'd never know it from the quality of what we see onscreen. The DVD extras include an original short film by the director (28 minutes and worth watching), two insightful post-screening Q&As (one at NASA) with the principals, and interesting short videos on the film's set design and effects. This first-time director is one to watch.

Awesome, awesome movie. There aren't a lot of pure scifi (not action) films that come out anymore, so this was a real treat.
