CONTAINS SPOILERS... A dark tale based on the true story of Aileen Wuornos, (played by Charlize Theron) one of America's first female serial killers. Wuornos had a difficult and cruel childhood plagued by abuse and drug use in Michigan. She became a prostitute by the age of thirteen, the same year she became pregnant. She eventually moved to Florida where she began earning a living as a highway prostitute--servicing the desires of semi-truck drivers. The tale focuses on the nine month period between 1989 and 1990, during which Wuornos had a lesbian relationship with a woman named Selby ( Played by Christina Ricci). And during that very same time, she also began murdering her clientele in order to get money without using sex. This turned the tables on a rather common phenomena of female highway prostitutes being the victims of serial killers--instead Wuornos, herself, carried out the deeds of a cold-blooded killer. This is definitely a 5 STAR MOVIE in my humble opinion.

Extremely powerful movie from beginning to end. Amazingly, you begin to feel for a murderer as the story progresses. While some have only lauded the visual change of Charlize Theron, it's so much more than that. It's disturbing, sad, and emotional....

Extremely powerful movie from beginning to end. Amazingly, you begin to feel for a murderer as the story progresses. While some have only lauded the visual change of Charlize Theron, it's so much more than that. It's disturbing, sad, and emotional. Monster is an excellent film that still crosses my mind months after watching it, it really stays with you.

This isn't going to make you feel good (even if you're a feminist) and you're probably not going to want to watch it again, but one thing's for sure: it is succesful art. My feeling of dread illness after immersion into the lives of these characters...

This isn't going to make you feel good (even if you're a feminist) and you're probably not going to want to watch it again, but one thing's for sure: it is succesful art. My feeling of dread illness after immersion into the lives of these characters was total and real. Hats off to Jenkins, Theron, Ricci et al for creating a grimy, sick, and wholly real film.

Strong and depressing
very well acted and directed. bleak and rough. as they say, life's a bitch ans then you die (without giving out any spoilers). it's majorly depressing so I'd recommend it, but not if you're looking for a light or a feel good movie.

I also should note: quite miserable acting by Christina Ricci, portraying the lesbian girlfriend. "Monster" can make a strong impact on the viewer, but can also make him very angry...not quite at society which allows this to happen (well...that too), but rather on the makers of this film...
