Monster Man, 2003

Imagine a mash-up of "Jeepers Creepers", "House of 1000 Corpses", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and a road trip flick starring Screech from "Saved by the Bell" and a typically obnoxious Jack Black character. Now throw in a monster truck and you've got "Monster Man". Nerdy virgin Adam ("Not Another Teen Movie's" Eric Jungmann) and his chubby, cocky friend Harley (played by Robert Urich's nephew) are on their way to their high school almost-girlfriend's wedding when they stumble into a town where almost everyone has some kind of bad amputation. It's all because of Monster Man, a stitch-faced killer whose main weapon is a cross between a tank and a monster truck. The first 3/4 of the movie is a road trip flick involving bad feelings between former friends, adolescent humor and a hot hitchhiker. The last quarter contains nearly all the horror. Some things don't make sense in that part. For instance, given the reason for the amputations, why would everyone in this town have one? How many limbs does Monster Man's brother need? Why does the hitchhiker's accent change at the end? What good did hiding her southern accent do? Why does the Jack Black-like character wait until the very last minute to come to his friend's aid when he could have saved him much earlier? A lot of this is contrived stuff, but the ending is enjoyable enough to redeem what would otherwise have been a two-star flick at best. This flick was written and directed by the same writer/director who more recently brought us "Shoot 'em Up" shortly after such forgettable films as "Girl Fever" and "100 Girls", which explains a lot about this minor horror/comedy. Worth a watch for those who can get through forty-five minutes of sophomoric jokes and one of the worst sex scenes in recent memory to get to the squished heads and Satanism.
