I really wanted to give this movie 4 stars. I really did. The cinematography alone makes this movie worth watching. It's just beautiful. It puts a human face on Genghis Khan, not sure how historically accurate it is, but it certainly makes him a more sympathetic character. My biggest problem with the movie is that there were huge gaps in events between some scenes. Most conspicuously absent is any mention of how Temudjin actually went about gaining a following. In one scene he's alone and vowing to unite the Mongols, in the next he has a massive army behind him. It was rather jarring. Still, despite that, this is a really beautiful film.

Had some amazing battle scenes, along with the history of Genghis Khan which I have always enjoyed. If you like movies based in historical truths, then you will enjoy this movie.

Spectacular epic about the coming to power of Genghis Khan (the first episode of a trilogy), with stunning cinematography and solid acting. Weaves an interesting tapestry with classic themes of nobility, honor, friendship, family and enduring love. I had some minor quibbles with amorphous transitions and deus-ex-machina resolutions, but everything else was so good that those fell by the wayside. This movie is certainly violent (how could it be otherwise, when it's about one of the greatest and most famously savage warriors in history?), but is actually much less graphic in that regard than I expected. The gore basically amounts to loads of slashing and bashing with luxurious, artistic arcs of blood splatter. However, these shots are usually taken in wide scope with quick cutaways, and the camera doesn't linger over the details. The sumptuous beauty of the landscapes and grand scale of the final battle scene make a far greater, and more lasting, impression.

With subtitles I generally don't rate movies this highly, but the camera work, acting and costumes are fantastic. Well worth watching.
