Summary of Midnight Cowboy

Joe Buck (Jon Voight), an aspiring male prostitute from Texas, heads to Manhattan where he hopes to find plenty of wealthy women willing to pay for the services of a handsome man. When he arrives, the naive country boy befriends Ratso Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman), a tubercular homeless con artist who dreams of moving to Florida. As they go about trying to get the money Ratso needs, the two men confront the seediness, corruption, and cruelty that flourish in the big city.

Based on the novel by James Leo Herlihy, this Oscar-winning film (Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay) features brilliant performances by Voight and Hoffman, and brings to the screen an unusually gritty realism in its portrayal of the streets of New York City.

I'm not really sure where to start with this one. Midnight Cowboy was the first and only X-rated movie to win an Academy Award for Best Picture. Two years after it's release, it's rating was reduced to an R because so many theaters wouldn't carry X-rated movies. What you've got now is a movie that would be a mild R if it was released theatrically in 2005. In fact, excise the few seconds of nudity, and Midnight Cowboy would probably be PG-13. First, I loved the characters. They were colorful, yet real. I didn't feel like I was watching actors portraying some screen writers creations. The writing combined with the wonderful acting by Jon Voight and the always great Dustin Hoffman made me feel like I was watching as the lives of these New Yorkers played out. Their hardships and troubles felt real. I got a glimpse of a world I would otherwise never have known. The entire movie, from beginning to end, was somewhat depressing. Watching Midnight Cowboy and seeing the moral downfall of it's characters can really put a damper on your day. The ending was likewise disheartening, yet it brought a sense of closure to the film in very effective way. Midnight Cowboy is certainly a good movie. It's well written, acted, and directed. However, it's a hard movie to actually enjoy, and that's why I rated it how I did. The DVD certainly could use some retouching. The audio was acceptable. The dialogue was easily understood, and there was no overbearing hissing or scratching. But, this 36 year old soundtrack sounded flat and a bit lifeless. The video was slightly sub par. The transfer was marred with flecks of dust and damage to the print. The contrast varied from scene to scene. Shadow detail was weak, and nearly all of the darker scenes showed signs of compression flaws and pixelation. The colors seemed washed out, but this may have been representative of the original theatrical run, I don't know. Well, at least it was widescreen...
