I never read the book, but this movie was pretty boring for the most part. The first half was better than the last. The characters are not relatable or interesting in most cases. The story does not build the characters very well. Overall, the movie had a few interesting situations, but was mostly boring, and hard to keep watching.

It is interesting to me that there was such a fuss made about the fact that some of the actors in the movie were Chinese instead of Japanese. I mean I undestand this on a basic level, but its ironic when the main characters beauty is drawn from the fact that she has BLUE EYES. I would think this would be the greater outrage.
I don't think anyone that has seen the movie could argue that its extremely well acted and beautifully and respectfully told.

I read the book a few years ago and the atmosphere really stayed with me. I hoped the movie would do the same or at least that I would enjoy it as much as the book. But I was disappointed. The movie is nice and full of beauty, atmospheric and stylish. It has all the elements of the book - social differences, love and romance, politics, etc., but the presentation is not nearly as good.
