This was a movie worth watching over again. Finally a different approach to film making. I liken it to a path that has an end.

Amazing acting. great story. but for the life of me i could not figure out what was going on. its way too confusing to be enjoyable i kept having to pause the movie and think " ok whats happening". but thats the point i guess. i did like the fact that it wasnt typical. and the acting is great so even though i was confused it wasnt boring to watch. and i came away with an appreciation for a memory that works though so it wasnt a complete waste of time. overall i think its worth a watch.

With the exception of one obvious and immense plot hole - how does Leonard know he has this condition, if he suffers from it? - this is an excellent movie. The incoherent, disjoint (and reversed) narrative lets us vicariously share the protagonist's condition, as we try to assemble the meaning of all those notes and photos and tattoos. I can't think of any other film that actually posed epistemological questions. What does it mean to *know* something? What does it mean to remember? At the end of the movie, we may be more confused about the situation than we were at the beginning, exactly as the director intended. The acting is quite good. Guy Pearce manages to be forceful and disoriented at the same time; the other cast members are effective in their conniving characters. Lots of location shooting with handheld cameras gives the viewer a "you are there" feeling, even if we're not sure where "there" is. DVD extras are a few scraps of material, designed (I guess) to help the viewer understand the background a little more; plus the trailer and the short story the screenplay was adapted from.

Like other gimmick films such as the Usual Suspect or Blair Witch Project, this movie does break new ground with the use of the backward narrative. However, just as the last scene of Blair Witch left me with a "huh...what was that?" feeling, so does the end of Memento. Acting, and a good story is sacrificed to making the gimmick work. It's not bad, but not worthe the 5 stars.

Many reviewers promote this film based on the interesting technique of showing the chapters in reverse order. While that is an interesting storytelling device, I recommend this film because of the human and philosophical aspects explored. This is not likely to become a "great" film, as judged by posterity. But it is an excellent one. Also, if you like noir, especially all the plot twists usually involved, you will enjoy this. It's a brainbender with an interesting type of hero.
--SPOILER ALERT!! Read further only after seeing the movie.-- The central character is being used by a dirty cop, so he decides to use himself the same way, in order to kill the cop.
Through this provocative scenario, we are drawn into the main question, what is life with no new memories. Human brains are in part a running recording device. Aside from one's progeny, many would say all you have at the end is your memories. But what if that was taken away? Would life be worth living, or would you become effectively dead? This is the position the dirty cop character takes. It's fair to say that anyone with this condition gets better treatment in our compassionate society. Becoming a dirty cop's hitman and being used by everyone you meet is an extreme, and an extremely unlikely, scenario.
In fact, the central character seems to believe that what makes a man is more than the ability to make memories. They are nice, but we are more than that. We make decisions about right and wrong, good and bad. Even if we won't remember those decisions, a good heart has to make good decisions.

Unless, of course, if you are Leonard Shelby.
