Every one of the characters in this film speak attenuated, literary prose each to the other, without interruption, for the length of the film. My impression is that the script was sloppily written and then edited by a host of recent English lit. grads. The premise--a single human story examined through both a comic and a tragic lens--fails because the characters are neurotic and uninteresting. In the end one wonders how such a privileged bunch of smucks could live their lives in a dynamic city and not be improved by it.

Since we won free tickets to see "Melinda and Melinda," it was pleasant to spend an evening mulling the tragic and comic faces of love as drawn by theatre types. Most of the acting is top-notch and the sets are right-on. The tragedy is a good portrait of the woman who has everything (except mental health). The comedy offers funny moments for anyone unsophisticated enough to laugh at (ugh!) Will Ferrell. For anyone set against Will Ferrell from the start, why not see "Metropolitan" for the eightieth time instead?

Im not sure what I was expecting from Melinda and Melinda, but I didnt get it. And Ive never quite been able to put a finger on what makes Woody Allens movies so enjoyable. Is it his absurd characters, his deft writing, or his off-the-wall comedy that sneaks up on you and gets a laugh out of even the most uncomfortable situations? More likely, its a combination of all three. And while Melinda and Melinda certainly had all three, the pieces didnt add up like they should have.
The overriding positive aspect of Melinda and Melinda was easily the cast. From the title character played by Radha Mitchell (who really proved shes an actress with this role) to smaller parts portrayed by Will Ferrell, Johnny Lee Miller, Amanda Peet, and Chloë Sevigny, everyone was fantastic. Not only is the movie an impressive showcase of acting talent, but its also a good example of outstanding casting. Some of the roles were filled by very unlikely actors (I never expected to see Ferrell in a Woody Allen movie, and his slightly subdued performance was funny and charming) but it worked out quite well.
I have to hand it to Allen: Melinda and Melinda is a great story with an amazing if unexpected cast, and its told like only a master of human dramas could tell it. But, for whatever reason, it didnt grab hold of me like it should have. Maybe I couldnt relate to the story or the characters. Maybe theres a flaw that I just havent recognized yet. Im not sure what the problem is, but Melinda and Melinda rubbed me the wrong way. If youre a Woody Allen fan, then Melinda and Melinda might be right up your alley. Regardless, there are a lot of reason to see the movie. Heck, see it for Mitchells performance, if for nothing else.

another brilliant woody allen idea
in this film, woody allen shows that it is all about the narration. the movie tells the same story in two ways - as a comedy and as a tragedy. i loved the movie and it's funny to see the combination of woody allen's writing and will ferrell's acting.
