In this film, a band of young, courageous Norwegians become saboteurs to fight the Nazis that have taken over their country in the early days of World War II. They're led by the real-life Max Manus, and the exploits recounted in the film appear to be true. The film is great at showing the camaraderie between the band of fighters, and feels real even though it's something of a throwback to vintage Hollywood war movies. Ably acted on all counts, the cast get us into the story and the director whips up a lot of tension: Will they pull or their latest raid? Or will they be captured, killed, tortured (as happens more than once)? The director also is good as showing the strain on Manus as more and more of his bosom buddies are lost in actions he's called them to. The movie is decidedly not, as one quote in a newspaper ad for "MAX MANUS" states, "The greatest WWII film ever!" But it's engrossing and nostalgic and easy to sit through.
