Operating at about the level of a third-year college student, Woody Allen takes a stab at reformulating Dostoyevsky's message: crime without punishment proves that the world is essentially without meaning. Unfortunately, Allen chooses to portray something he apparently knows very little about: the English upper class. Attitudes are contrived, accents are wrong, situations are artificial, characters are stereotypical. Behind all this is a latent hostility against the people he portrays which is annoying because it has no place in the story. Another disappointment.

Wasn't sure what to expect with this movie so went in with a very open mind. Throughout, the movie "felt" lie an old film despite its contemporary setting amongst the impossibly privileged tennis-club set. I was never really sure whether CHris Wilton's character set out to snare his way into high society but it worked nontheless. There was a real chemistry between him & Scarlet Johanssen's character, Nola. Also though it did have a Hitcockian feel about it too.
As with the very best of thrillers, there were a few moments of genuine surprise, with a truly inspired double twist at the end. Although at times the movie seemed to lack pace, overall it was well-judged and built agonisingly towards its climax.
Great to see Woody back on top form!

Being my first Woody Allen movie, made me expect a lot from it, having read about his unique film making and I have to admit it was a different movie watching experience I had. I felt it was bit of a drag initially and also I had never hated and liked the same character in a movie and in Match Point I did exactly that. Even if you don't want some people to win, the script cannot be told otherwise.

The final 40 minutes of Match Point are filled with suspense and terror. The final five minutes are even better.
Tennis pro Chris (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers) just moved to London. He meets Tom Hewett (Matthew Goode) at a lesson and later meets Tom's sister, Chloe (Emily Mortimer). Chloe falls in love with Chris instantly. Chris is more reluctant, but enjoys the welcoming of the wealthy family. He's invited to weekend getaways and dinners inside their multiple estates.
At one dinner party, he meets Nola (Scarlett Johansson), an American girl who's engaged to Tom. She becomes Chris' obsession. He wants to seduce her and doesn't care that she's engaged. He also wants it to be discrete to not threaten his current situation with Chloe. The family hates Nola and on one rainy day the Hewett mother berates her acting dreams. Nola storms out and walks outside through the rain to think. Chris notices and follows her. They make love in the rain on a back meadow.
Chris' obsession grows, but he can't leave Chloe, and Nola won't leave Tom. Each are comfortable with the rich lifestyle, so they sacrifice their mutual affection for now.
This film explores moral values, love, death, abortion and fate. Chris is an ex-tennis star, but could never beat the best in the world. He says it's because each time the ball hit the top of the net, it would never roll over. He was unlucky.
The first shot in Match Point is of a tennis ball hitting the tape on the net, hovering in mid-air, and pausing as the narrator explains a ball can go either forward and you win, or back and you lose. It's all determined by fate and luck. We're given this image one more time, with a ring, later in the movie. If you can survive the first hour of this film, which is very slow, the back half is remarkable. I kind of wanted to see how Chris would hold up over time, but leaving it up to the imagination may be this film's lasting effect. How do any of us sleep at night? Four stars.

10/10Must See
Before getting into just how great this hard-edged London-based story of class mesalliance is, let me preface it by saying that my nomination for one of the worst performances ever by a leading actor in a major movie is Jonathan Rhys-Meyers in the remake of "The Magnificent Ambersons," done for cable a few years ago. By contrast, I thought he was effective and controlled, just right, in "Match Point," a great old-fashioned thriller (in a lower key) dressed up in spiffy contemporary clothes. (I should probably not call it old-fashioned at all.) You may not believe it is even a Woody Allen movie. If there is any doubt that Allen has matured into an incredibly masterful -- to say nothing of versatile -- filmmaker this 2005 creative achievement should put it to rest. (He also is not acting in it, and I think his absence sometimes helps his creative efforts.) Without openly aping Hitchcock or other ordinary ambition-led-astray clichés, he renders an exciting and engrossing tale of twisted fortunes that leaves your allegiances all slightly askew. For a director absolutely in love with the past, this one seethes sharply with the sensibility of today. In making something new, he has effectively absorbed the past examples here, not merely re-created them. Not just a real artistic synthesis, but a gratifying night at the movies. 1-09

Not even close to Woody Allen's better films. The characters are insufferable, and the good acting doesn't make up for it, nor does the convoluted "suspense" of the "dark" deed. It did however make me want to watch his "Crimes and Misdemeanors" again. It's one of his best, and in the same thematic domain. Neil LaBute's "In the Company of Men" is of the same ilk, and manages to be devastating without resorting to the macabre.

This movie was sluggish and even when it appeared to be going somewhere, it just fell flat. It was the typical "Boy loves girl but can't have girl 'cause he's married" kind of story, with a couple twists thrown in for good measure, but nothing sensational. This one didn't keep me interested since it was all but telling you what was going to happen. 2.5 stars for the great performances in a so-so film. 1/18/09

Some movies are pretty good but have a bad ending North Country comes to mind. Some movies are horrible but have a good ending. Match point caught my attention at the beginning and knocked it home with.I really liked this movie. The writing was the definition of tight. The characters were fun to watch maybe not someone you could root for but think about it like watching a well played chess match. I reccomend this movie for people who think they don't like Woody Allen films.
