Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, 2003

If you are looking for a film aimed at the hormonally-driven multiplex habituae, this one is not for you. However, if you are interested in an exciting yarn with well-developed characters, this may be right up your alley. Peter Wier has crafted a masterpiece based on some of the most satisfying historical fiction there is. Watch the first 5 minutes. Even before the titles roll, you are shown more historical information than you get in the total of most films. And if you want to see how far he will go for accuracy, pay close attention to the sailor on the bow of the Surprise when they sail through the snow towards the South Pole. Crowe and Bettany, though not physically true to the characters that O'Brian created, are absolutely spot on in their relationship as the man of action and his thoughtful scientific partner. Crowe has a physicality and gravity that comes right out of the screen. The rest of the crew are excellent, especially Max Pirkis as Blakeney. While the battles and the sailing are spectacular, I found the strength of the film is in the personal relations. Their life on board ship is truly believable and I have used this movie as a teaching aid on leadership. This is one movie that is worth seeing again and again.
