almost too painful to watch
A psychological drama that has no traits whatsoever of the alleged comedy it is supposed to be. Or do I just not understand what is funny about the ***y Margot (Nicole Kidman)? Or should I think the tragically helpless Malcolm (Jack Black) is funny.
They are the opposites in a revealing study of the successful woman and her emotional poverty. Margot has really made it: a career as a writer, a sweet husband (John Torturo) and a dedicated son. But she is so full of herself, so self-righteous in her success, her morals and her amateur psychology of others. And she pushes and pulls them around, like figurines on a stage. Her main victims are her sister and her son, because they want to be close to her. She constantly humiliates them in subtle, hardly noticeable ways.
Unfortunately I know too many women in real life who are exactly like her, so the drama is almost too painful to watch. But that, eventually, is only a measure of how smart the script is.
And Jack Black's character? He is the under-achiever who is unable of manipulating people and emotions. He is honest and sincere and thus as apparently ugly as real people tend to be. And his golden heart is not rewarded.

Im a huge fan of Nicole Kidman, but unfortunately I couldnt get more than halfway into this movie. I felt lost the whole time, and really had no idea what was going on.

Foulmouthed, dysfunctional family gathers for a wedding. Shot in dim light using the same color balance you would expect in a home movie. Was this on purpose? Who could possibly care. Skip this one.

Once again Nicole Kidman makes another bold choice. I Like Nicole Kidman, and Jennifer Jason Leigh, Cirian Hinds, and Jack Black, so even if the movie does not work, it works, so I'm giving it 3 Stars. Just because of all of the 5 Star fire power in this movie. At first I gave it 4 stars but that was too generous, I think it is a 3 Star movie. This movie is only for Die-Hard Nicole Kidman fans or Die-Hard Jennifer Jason Leigh Fans, I know how that is, it is impossible for me not to watch every movie the Jennifer Jason Leigh has made. A Die Hard Fan

Emotionally draining while somehow also being void of emotion, 'Margot at the Wedding' is a disappointing follow-up to Baumbach's great 'The Squid and the Whale'. This film just seems to meander through it's largely plotless miasma of family and relationship drama, while deciding to never reward us with a decisive payoff. Kidman and Black, however, do shine in roles that provide them with some gems of lines to hurl at the screen; it's a shame that what they're saying is not at al evocative.
