PT Anderson's dark and stormy soap opera- or maybe it's just straight Opera-opera - with an ensemble cast of heartsick Master Thespians croaking to the cheap seats.(Cue Jon Lovitz: ACT-INGGG!!!) It gives Altmanesque a bad name and it's a unique mess of a movie. It's so excessive that I squirmed like a tadpole in my seat and couldn't make eye contact with the characters out of embarrassment. I've seen overbaked movies before but this one leapfrogs all of them. Julianne Moore, in particular, has a scene in a drugstore that was so terribly written and overacted that it's just torture to watch. I desperately wanted a hook to appear off the side of the screen and pull her to safety. Later Tom Cruise's slithery character has an awkward crying scene that was pretty embarrassing too, but at least he was able to cajole his way to an Oscar nomination. This is not, though, your run-of-the-mill failed movie from a good director or just a typical hambone actorfest. It cracks up so spectacularly at the end that it burns into your cortex forever. I won't give it away if you haven't seen it, ribbit, but it's a doozy. You may want to rent this to see just how loopy an amphibious.. er.. sorry.. ambitious filmaker can get. But who knows? Maybe it will touch you deeply, change your life and all that, and I'm just some Netphlix toad with a heart two sizes too small. That's possible, but I cried at "Bridge to Teribithia", so I'm not made of stone. In any case it's cheese on a grand scale - High Gothic Velveeta - and I've never been able to look at a Paul Thomas Anderson movie the same way since. Just bring plenty of hankies and some Compound W.

In 1999 a lot of soon to be classics were dropping out of the sky but Magnolia was different to say the least. The most unforgettable cast in ages is a defeat of its own,but I think the true nature of the film is the connection we all have.Everyones life is unique and we all contribute to the end result. No man or woman has anymore value placed on them then anyone else we encounter.A day,a single day can change our whole outlook on life,we can begin seeing just how fragile and odd our lives are and just how similar we all seem to be.We may live unlike parts in this world but were of flesh and blood and so were bound more than we know.
Length is a problem for most when viewing Magnolia for the first time but I assure you the 3 hours arent wasted and fly by.The actors within the movie are there to entertain and so they do quite satisfactorily. The talent here is a large collection of names and would take a rather large period of time to give individual recognition to so I will rather say my favorites.Tom Cruise adds another oscar nomination for his work as Frank T.J. Mackey who has perhaps the best seminar scene of all time, then comes John C. Reilly as Officer Jim Kurring who has an interest in drug-addicted Claudia, finally one worth mentioning is Jeremy Blackman as Stanley whos troubling father and need to perform for him mark a true frustration among cleverly-stressed children.
With so many wonderful performances and an ending sure to remain in the brain of everyone who sees it,Magnolia is Paul Thomas Andersons baby.Everything from the writing to the famous Aimee Mann song pieces itself together for a massive epic. There are stranger things among us then just those who experience distant journeys from our own.No matter how contrasting our expeditions are we all seem to stretch out only to bounce back to each other. This slinky effect is a way of saying were all human and therefore we mustnt hover over our coincidences but instead simply be among our neighbors.

IMDB says 188 minutes, but it will seem much much more...
I think the next quotation will say it all:
"She sat there for three hours screaming "I want my life back!""
-The gilmore girls (about Lorelai gilmore).

Some earlier reviewer said that you had to suspend your disbelief to really "see" this movie, to get it. I think that's true. I think it's also true that your "mood" has to be right when you are watching it. The movie is about life, and death, and being human. If you want to watch a comedy, go do that: this isn't one. This movie has layers, many many layers and when you strip them all away what you come away with is what you put into it. What I came away with was that life is beautiful, but you have to work damn hard to get to the beauty. What you may come away with after seeing this may be entirely different, but I think you should try. The movie is good enough that giving it your full attention shouldn't be too much to ask. Suspend your disbelief. Stop snickering, and watch this with an open heart. It is worth it.

Kind of a rip off of Short Cuts by Robert Altman. The acting is solid, but the premise is a bit silly. The frog scene is totally ridiculous... Entertaining but thats it...
