What better way to visually demonstrate the lonliness in two compelling characters than to place them in a foreign land and culture? The relationship that the two main characters form over a few short days of idle time in Japan is unusual but believable. The connect in a place where neither seems to be able to connect with anyone else. It was a great movie for me, and one I've recommended to several friends.

No connection.Two people lost in the world meet by chance in Tokyo,one is a middle aged out of work actor,the other a young woman out of college and recently married to an overworked photographer.They both regret their marriages and feel somewhat out of place.With no communications going on any time soon with the locals and in a city unfamiliar to them both,a rather odd relationship begins.The two make a pact to help each other through this awkward experience but with such lives as theirs is there any hope of this love lasting?Lost in Translation shows you a story of what it's like to have no association to the outside world.

Ok - here's the deal (as if I were the expert)! You have to know what to expect from this film before you see it to enjoy it. If you go in expecting a comedy you will be disappointed. This is not a typical Bill Murray movie. It is a drama, not a comedy. There is some comedy in it, but it is sparse and subdued. (Although the hospital waiting room scene is hilarious in my opinion - not so much Bill Murray, who is having a conversation with an old Japanese woman, neither of whom can understand each other - but the two women in the background who are trying to control their laughter listening to the conversation). Also, people are complaining that there is no ending. Well... that's part of the point. It's not about resolving the characters problems. It's about each discovering that they aren't alone as people with problems and finding comfort in each other because of that, despite the fact that they have little else in common.

I tried to appreciate this movie. I really did. And don't get me wrong, I "got" the film just fine. I understand that it was meant to be a quiet contemplation on being lonely in a strange land and realizing one's poor choices in life, but that doesn't change the fact that this movie is still deadly dull. Pretty, yes. Thoughtful, yes. But still not a film I can picture myself watching again, unless I find myself alone and depressed in Tokyo. Then it would be perfect, except it'd probably just make me envious of Bill Murray over the fact that at least he had Scarlett Johansson. Speaking of whom, though she may have an impressive posterior, I've never found Scarlett to be a very compelling actress. Murray is really the only reason to watch this. He's quite good, and I could completely sympathize with his character despite having little in common with him, but I still can't heartily recommend the film.

Lovely and clever film
This is a clever and touching film about a relationship between two lonely strangers finding each other. Bill Murray successfully proves that he is much more than a comedian.
