Looking for Eric, 2009

I have mixed feelings about this film. It sets out as a bittersweet comedy about a likeable loser who decides to get his life back on track with the help of his footballing hero, the enigmatic Eric Cantona. It's nice, genuinely funny and quite heartwarming. Then somewhere along the way it turns nasty, with a sub-plot about inner city gangs. Again, this is fine. Social commentary is what Loach does well, and here we are asked to consider how gang violence affects normal, working-people who just want to get on with their lives. But do the two threads work well together? I'm not so sure. To me it felt like the gang plot intruded on the sweet-natured story I had been watching up until that point, and the resolution left a bitter taste in my mouth.

If you love the game of football this movie will really get you going! The Acting is good. As in many sport film you get touched by similarity to real life.
