Lilya 4-Ever, 2002

A poignant look at post-Soviet life. Indeed, this film offers a rare and especially interesting perspective on the life of the Russian-speaking minority in Estonia. This film's message about female trafficking and sexual slavery is unquestionably worth hearing and well-structured. Akinshina and Bogucharsky are young actors wise beyond their years, able to capture the forced precocity of post-Soviet street children to a t. My one complaint with this film is some of its overly simplistic and forward symbolic imagery. I am not a person who desires opacity in film, but this imagery was just too upfront for my liking. Still, this film is more than just worth watching, it's something most people should watch and from which we all can learn something.
